Lacey Holsworth, the 8-year-old cancer patient whose friendship with Adreian Payne and the Michigan State basketball team touched the heart of the nation, has died.

The family posted a message on Instagram and Twitter overnight that read, “Princess Lacey has achieved the ultimate victory. She now dances among angels.... The world is a better place because you were in it. Our hearts are broken. We love you Doll. Dance all night... Mommy and Daddy, Will, Mitchell, and Luke #LoveLikeLacey.”

Not long after, Michigan State sophomore Gary Harris posted on his Twitter account, “Wow i dont even wanna believe it @adorablelacey 's family is in my prayers. I know she will be watching over us all #RIPLACEY.”

Adreian must be devastated. He and Lacey had forged such a sweet friendship. How sad for him and her family. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of them.

Rest in peace, little angel.
