'Princess Lacey,' friend of MSU's Payne, dies after battle with cancer

Lacey Holsworth, the 8-year-old cancer patient whose friendship with Adreian Payne and the Michigan State basketball team touched the heart of the nation, has died.
The family posted a message on Instagram and Twitter overnight that read, Princess Lacey has achieved the ultimate victory. She now dances among angels.... The world is a better place because you were in it. Our hearts are broken. We love you Doll. Dance all night... Mommy and Daddy, Will, Mitchell, and Luke #LoveLikeLacey.
Not long after, Michigan State sophomore Gary Harris posted on his Twitter account, Wow i dont even wanna believe it @adorablelacey 's family is in my prayers. I know she will be watching over us all #RIPLACEY.
The relationship between Lacey and Payne became a national story as the NCAA Tournament progressed. Lacey, after joining the celebration in Indianapolis when the Spartans won the Big Ten tournament, was with the team in New York for the East Regionals and went to Dallas with Payne for the College Slam Dunk Championship. . .

Obviously transcends sports. RIP, Lacey.
