Nine people are dead after a semi careened into and set aflame a tour bus carrying high school students to visit a prospective university this evening.

The crash, on Interstate 5 near Orland, injured up to 50 people and led to the closure of all lanes of Interstate 5 lanes near Orland this evening, said Tracy Hoover, an officer with the California Highway Patrol in Willows.

Authorities called out a number of ambulances to the crash, about a mile north of Highway 32 and Interstate 5 after it was reported at 5:41 p.m.

Hoover said the semi, a Fed Ex truck, was driving southbound when it crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the bus, which was carrying 46 people, mostly Los Angeles area high school students, to visit California State University, Humboldt.

This is so tragic. Tomorrow is spring preview for prospective incoming students. I assume that the university chartered the bus. Damn. It's going to be a tough day on campus tomorrow. HSU is a relatively small community. This is awful.

Was why the trucks bust into flames. Were these the gas tanks erupting? Students reported after the initial crash, a second and third explosion. Was the Fed Ex truck carrying something flammable? Horrific crash.. my hearts go out to the students for going though this.

Our tanks are just under the cabin doors on either side. Compression will ignite diesel fuel.
