Crimea Bans Pride as Russia Anti-Gay Law is Imposed
Source: gay star news
Crimea has banned a planned Pride march on the basis of Russias gay propaganda law.
Sevastopol authorities banned today (14 April) the parade scheduled for 22-23 April.
This is the first time LGBTI people in the peninsula have been forced to live under Russian homophobic rules since the beginning of the Crimea crisis.
LGBTI people were largely split on the referendum that saw 97% vote in favor of seceding from Ukraine and join Russia.
While many feel culturally Russian, they know the laws they are already being forced to live by are far more homophobic.

(2,364 posts)I also find it humorous that Obama unashamedly plays that card when he was late to the marriage equality party himself.
But I am glad his daughters enlightened him.

Which parades celebrating LGBT did President Obama prevent from happening? Or (and I find this more likely) are you simply drawing a false equivalency to make your support of Putin more palatable...?

(2,364 posts)Gays and lesbians still can't marry today in more than half of the states, so exactly what moral authority do the elected leaders of the United States have in posturing as enlightened on that issue? Obama came out for marriage equality when it was politically manageable, probably even beneficial. Is that even debatable?
And how is it a "false equivalency"? I'm referring to LGBT rights in general.

Instead of covertly arming terrorists seeking to destroy the secular state of Syria, he has supported Assad against them.
He also offered Obama a way out from what looked like a direct American assault on Syria.
I've never bought the Administration's line that Assad and the Syrian Army were responsible for the sarin attack.
That never made any logical sense at all, IMO.
I didn't vote for Obama so that he could waive the federal law against arming terrorists, in order to support his rebels.

Why don't we discuss the future of LGBT rights...or women's rights...in Syria should Obama's rebels win the day?

(62,265 posts)I'm sure someone will come along any minute now and tell you how much worse Ukraine was. That whole region is fucked up, but Russia is regressing while countries that align with the EU are progressing.
It is interesting how that article quotes Yuriy Syrotyuk, a leader of fascist Svoboda. All the people decrying Svoboda's role? Well shit, they got exactly what Svoboda wanted...

Maybe the Russians are like many others who are so over the top against gays; secretly perverse.

(7,133 posts)which will not deter our Putin lovers on DU from defending Mother Russia. Still, reminds me of a current joke. A dog is seen running away from Ukraine into Russia. People ask, why are you running? The dog replies, things are really bad in Ukraine, the fascists have taken over. One week later, the same dog is spotted running from Russia back to Ukraine. Why are you returning? people want to know. Says the dog: well, at least in Ukraine, we're allowed to bark.

(22,000 posts)The Russians took over and they are going to impose their laws. Some believe the situation in Crimea will improve, this is clearly not an indication of that happening.
