New Ohio gay marriage ballot language approved
Source: Twinsburg Bulletin
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has certified the language in a new version of a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at overturning the state's gay marriage ban.
The updated amendment includes language requiring that all legally valid marriages be treated equally under the law.
The amendment language approved by DeWine Monday would also keep clergy from being forced to perform a same-sex marriage. The language goes next to the state ballot board for review.
The group FreedomOhio is seeking to repeal and replace Ohio's 2004 prohibition on gay marriage.

This came out of nowhere. At least I did not know this was going on. Looks like the tidal wave is growing.

(6,852 posts)some LGBT rights organizations were not on board with this. They think they would loose in an off year in Ohio and it would set progress back a bit.

(11,076 posts)This will bring all of the whacks to the polls and by that I mean every right wing, homophobic soul will crawl to the polls if necessary to vote this down and....while they are there they will cast their vote for every rethug on the ballot. If Mr. DeWine certifies it, it is not for the good of society.

(11,076 posts)If you don't live in Ohio you better plan on getting here to GOTV. This is history and you can read it and weep. It has happened before. *'s buddies did it when Blackwell was SOS and you know Mr. Blackwell! Push this issue in the court where the imbecilic voters can't come out it droves to kill the movement. This issue will defeat any chance of our Tea Bagging 'Gov' being unseated. The lying awful commercials that will appear and be played over and over to kill this issue. Ohioans will all live oppression for another cycle of insanity. Please watch and see how it turns out.
Also, you insinuating that I am setting human rights back stinks. I urge people to use the avenues that will be the most successful. This is a trap, the right has done it before. But, I don't need to tell yo because you already have a handle on it.
Have a great day!

(19,964 posts)I've been working for the Democratic Party and LGBT rights for over 40 years. I don't need that snide remark from you, thanks. During that time I've faced shotguns, the KKK, being run off the road and more crap than you can imagine. And if you'd care to visit my journal archives, you'd know just how closely I follow the Ohio elections.

(37,428 posts)The good news is that the supply of narrow-minded bigots is not increasing, and that homophobia is losing traction among them.
It's also really cool that the issue at hand will not be discrimination, but rather the repeal of it.

(11,076 posts)We have been under a tea bagger gov and it has brought the crazy to Main Street! In Ohio, home of the gerrymander and crazy christian voter (which is different from non- crazy christian voters...trust me) things are pretty raw. We don't know when the last time we had an election that was counted properly was.
When we first got our Diebold machines I asked the tech weenie who was holding the training for the Board of Elections, if the machines were linked to the internet. His reply was, 'Did you see me hook a wire to the machine?' At this time in history we had wireless at the house so I was certain that this guy was totally full of it. As a result of asking that question I was not called to work the poll that year.
Our Kerry signs were burned multiple times in the front yard!
Face it, if Kasich gets reelected this fall it will put all people, of all race, creed and persuasion back another 50 years. Our parkland has been threatened by fracking, the state profit on alcohol has been given to a private company that is not subject to audit, public schools bleed as charter schools suck the gravy out of the system. The list goes on and on!
The more things change the more they stay the same. People can bet and hope about what might happen but unless they are willing to put their own feet on the ground to make sure that everything can be done to ensure a fair election they should be careful what they wish for in other corners of the country.
These are my last words on this. Living this is not fun. People are gonna do what they do and say what they say. Peace, Kim
