Carter urges Obama, Kerry to reject Keystone XL

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger "more climate upheaval" around the globe.

In an open letter to President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: "Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy."

The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come out against the pipeline.

That is one of former President Carter's sterling qualities: he says what he truly thinks and he doesn't equivocate. I hope President Obama and Secretary Kerry use this as political cover to not approve the pipeline.

I was sitting here wondering why Gore didn't speak out, then I remembered. He did very early on, saying the type of oil that would be flowing the pipeline is just about the dirtiest oil on earth, and it would be a very harmful thing for the climate. So long ago he publicly said this, I had just about forgotten.

Obama has said at most that Keystone will create at most 200 jobs and none of the oil will available for US use.

But CBC claims many jobs.

Who is right?

Why is the CBC printing this stuff? They sound desperate.

CBC tries to throw up the Iranian and OPEC crisis against Carter, and acts like we are going to get the oil.

Obama said the oil will be shipped straight to the Gulf to export and that not one barrel will be for the USA.

Who is right?

Canada and the Koch brothers, the main players in this, are just using the USA as a highway. And will not and not be used here. I've also read that they won't be paying any taxes and the Koch brothers net worth will go from their current about $100B to $200B from this deal here.

Now they've been pushing oil on trains that can derail, like the one in Canada and blow up; they've used the old pipeline that blew and polluted the water and land in Arkansas to ship the stuff; and groups in the different states threaten to secede if they can't get the pipeline they voted to have go through their states for the jobs; and of course those are ALEC legislators in those states; and Paul Ryan, Rand Paul and Boehner have insisted that Obama approve it in every C.R. (Continuing Resolution) since 2009 but he managed to negotiate out of it each time as he did with the personhood bills, etc.

I predict the pressure will increase by summer and if he doesn't approve it there will be violence and if he does our goose is cooked.

I thought the CBC was a good representation of the Canadian view. Now I think they are lying. Or else Obama is wrong. I don't think that he is, however.

Between a rock and a hard place, we find ourselves. And surrounded by Koch roaches coming out from under the rocks.

He's without a doubt the best ex-president in my lifetime, and maybe forever. So glad he's rebounded so nicely from the absiolute poinding the msm gave him during his term in office. Think he's the only anti-big oil, anti-Wall St. president we've ever had.
