Rahm, in a switch, opens door to 2016 Democratic convention

Source: Sun Times

WASHINGTON—Mayor Rahm Emanuel opened the door on Tuesday for the city to bid for the 2016 Democratic convention, a switch from February, when City Hall was not interested.

“We will evaluate the opportunity this could provide and proceed accordingly,” Emanuel spokesman Sarah Hamilton told me.

It’s not clear what has changed in the past months or how serious Emanuel really is about pursuing the Democratic convention, which would come as he ramps up his 2015 re-election bid.

By February, the Democratic and Republican National Committees had already launched their respective 2016 site selection searches, sending out letters to cities—including to Chicago—with general details about what a host city would have to put up to win the convention.

i suspect he realized what a bonanza in his personal fund-raising he would miss out on if he didn't strong arm the decision to hold it in chicago.

The statement quoted indicates a fairly tepid response to the request, as opposed to, say, Columbus, OH, which has been actively seeking the convention. From the Tribune, 17 minutes ago:

Chicago, the home of President Barack Obama and one of the nation’s top Democratic mayors, is among 15 cities that have been asked to submit proposals to host the 2016 Democratic presidential nominating convention, party officials said Tuesday.

Officials in the selected cities were notified by letter from Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who chairs the Democratic National Committee. The requests for proposals to host the late-summer convention, which were sent to cities that expressed some form of interest, are to be returned to the DNC on June 6.

...

Other cities that received requests for proposals were Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and Columbus, which has been actively courting a bid, and New York and Atlanta, which have hosted Democratic political conventions in the past three decades.

It's not going to be in Chicago, for a number of reasons.

And besides, what could possibly go wrong with having the convention in Chicago? (thinking of 1968)

There were no issues. The reason they ask so many cities is to make them feel important as if they really are being considered. The Party is only interested in two or three at the most.

According to reports Ohio was Republicans first choice to hold their convention but for whatever reason, unconfirmed reports indicate that the GOP has ruled Columbus, Ohio out which would have been the obvious and smartest choice for them. In my opinion Ohio is not only the best place to hold the convention simply because I live in Ohio, but also in my opinion Columbus not hosting the GOP narrows down significantly the possibility of the Republican Convention being held in Ohio because if they were going to have it in Ohio the most logical place would be in Columbus because it is the capital of Ohio which means Columbus more than any other city in Ohio has the capacity to accommodate the convention and the large numbers of idiots that are sure to flock to it.

Cleveland is a pretty solid Democratic voting district, so that wouldn't make much sense to hold the convention there, and as for Cincinnati it shares a border with Kentucky which is a solid red state that needs no pandering to, and geographically Columbus would have been the ideal choice seeing as it is located in the middle of the state which would provide for more accessibility to all the people who would go from across the state...

just my logic, anyone have an opinion on this matter?
