MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont House has passed a GMO labeling bill on Wednesday.
The bill has now passed both the House and Senate and has to be signed by Governor Shumlin before it becomes law.
I am proud of Vermont for being the first state in the nation to ensure that Vermonters will know what is in their food," Gov. Shumlin said. "The Legislature has spoken loud and clear through its passage of this bill. I wholeheartedly agree with them and look forward to signing this bill into law."
Several state representatives spoke up with reservations about funding a potential lawsuit. Lawmakers are anticipating a legal battle with agriculture companies that produce GMOs.
