Marijuana testing labs barred from taking samples from individuals
Source: Boulder Daily Camera
The kitchen of Brian and Meghan Wilson's rental home in Denver's Washington Park neighborhood looked like a chemistry lab. Using beakers, glass dishes and a botanical extractor, the couple coaxed oil from dispensary-bought marijuana plants, desperate to control the epileptic seizures of their 3-year-old daughter, Vivian.
Before giving it to the little girl, who likes to draw on an easel and play with her toothbrush, the Wilsons took their homemade oil to a Denver marijuana testing lab to make sure the dosage was correct.
All of that stopped after state regulators began informing marijuana testing labs that as a condition of holding a state license to test, they may only accept samples from licensed recreational pot shops, infused-product manufacturers and medical marijuana dispensaries.

I don't understand. If they're trying to regulate every ounce of pot in the state, why not allow individuals to have their pot tested? It seems to me that that would HELP them regulate it.

(16,230 posts)Could they maybe have someone who is licensed take the sample to the lab for them? Would that be legal?

(11,012 posts)medicines... just like big pharmacies do their best to keep drugs they manufacture under their complete control. I don't imagine that all cannabis dispensaries are in it for pure altruistic reasons.

(16,230 posts)They could pay that dispensary to have the extract tested for them. Everybody wins.

(16,230 posts)I didn't post in order to argue about how much control dispensaries have. I'm simply trying to suggest a solution for their problem. Railing against the dispensaries is secondary to getting this little girl the medicine she needs.

(23,720 posts)I do know a couple of people who produce oil, butter and edibles for a dispensary. So no, all dispensaries do not necessarily produce their own product. Many are more than happy when they find a good quality product they can purchase for resale.

(17,086 posts)Eventually it's inevitable that there will be bud competitions just like there are homebrewing competitions today, but the home grower, at present, doesn't have similar technology to the homebrewer's ability to measure specific gravity and infer alcoholic content, etc. (If that's how it works, more or less.) Just like any good American industry, the legislators want to favor corporations over the private producer. Seems like a good opportunity for an inventor to develop a home THC potency kit to me.

A big industry with its own high paid lobbyists, to pay off the legislative body, in the corporations' favor.

I have not as yet needed to test any product but it would make very good sense to me that I be given access to testing labs to determine the potency and usefulness of the herb I grow. We are, after all, legal patients entitled to a medication prescribed by our doctors and endorsed by the State.
This is an example of how ignorant the Colorado legislators are when it comes to making decisions about the end of marijuana prohibition.

Time to catch up, pols - your stupidity is harming people and costing revenue that could be better spent in other ways.
Congress - join the 21st century, you geezers.

(1 post)I do not take to labs for testing marijuana. I have purchased a home testing kits and used to test the product at home.
