(51,550 posts)Hagan, who is very vulnerable with bad poll numbers, was hoping to repeat what Claire McCaskill did with Todd Aikan. Hagan was hoping that crazy shitstain Brannon would win. Tillis will be a tougher component, and has a lot of money.
Looks like the GOP finally learned its lesson and the Repukes are falling in line with the establishment.

(449 posts)I'm a 21 year-old Obama voter (albeit not in NC), but I can assure you I will be at the polls in November. I try to impart the same urgency on my peers. There does seem to be a general lack of awareness however, and it's extremely frustrating. Even our local chapter of the College Dems is making a half-assed effort at GOTV compared to the amazing work we did in 2012. In my opinion, part of it is attributable to a failure in civics education. So many people my age don't even understand the political system, and that these midterms are absolutely critical to the agenda of the President they so enthusiastically voted for two years ago. A lame duck Obama is bad for Democrats, bad for the next Democratic presidential candidate, and bad for America.

(1,689 posts)It's an uphill battle with people like us. I'm 23 and have always tried vote even though it's usually been absentee while I've been at school, studying abroad, or working on a campaign. I've found that a lot of people are happy to weigh in on issues (whether they understand them at all or not) but when they have to do more than just talk, it's too much trouble. I think our generation has this sense that that's all it takes: if you have a spontaneous political conversation or change your profile picture to an equality sign or watch House of Cards, you're political. Just like you can call yourself a writer for keeping a blog, a photographer for posting pictures to instagram, a nerd for wearing thick rimmed glasses, etc. It's what you do that counts, and for a lot of young people that equals nothing.
I'm 20, voted for Obama in '12, and I actually did the research for the sample ballot for both my mom and I here in Orange County, CA. How many voters do research these days? If they did, we'd have a Democratic majority for years. One thing's for sure, I had to search pretty hard to find the actual lesser of several evils down here.
People I talk to seem to connect to me, and understand me when I discuss the issues and my beliefs (While I add a tad of humor). They're impressed. Communication is a key element that a lot of Democratic politicians just don't seem to grasp.
Also, I don't have Snapchat on my phone. Too busy studying for Berkeley/working at my job.

(19,348 posts)That seems to go in the face of the view that Tillis is strongest.

(54,335 posts)In my part of the country, many Republican voters are robotic, Foxsucking radical rightists. They are motivated by extremism, not moderation. If they don't get their way, they tune out about as fast as we would have if our 2008 nominee had been Max Baucus. Tillis is a slap in the face to them. Kay Hagan has a good chance of being re-elected, though it won't be without a full court press.

Tillis has many achilles heels.
