Government says no need to park recalled GM cars

Source: AP-Excite

By TOM KRISHER

DETROIT (AP) — There's no need to tell owners of recalled General Motors small cars to stop driving them, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

In a written response to two senators who asked for such an order, Foxx said engineers with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have determined it's not necessary.

GM is recalling 2.6 million small cars worldwide to replace ignition switches that suddenly can slip out of the run position and shut off the engine. That can knock out power-assisted steering and cause drivers to lose control and crash. It also disables the air bags. GM says at least 13 people have died in crashes linked to the problem. The company has admitted knowing about the problem for at least a decade, yet failing to recall the cars until this year.

The company has told owners to remove everything from their key chains, and the reduced weight will stop the switches from slipping into the "accessory" or "off" positions.

I wonder what it takes to get government officials who will do the right thing?

I haven't owned a GM car since the 80's, and that one had a bad ignition
switch too, among other problems. After that car, I always owned foreign...
first a VW Jetta, then two Toyotas, and then two Hondas. Honda is
the best.

My first Honda was a CR-V. It got recalled after a year; they notified me
and fixed the problem for free at their service center. My current Civic
hybrid, not a single problem since I bought it in 08.

It's like an internal, secret recall.

When they are aware of massive numbers of defective components or engineering flaws, they have waited until the vehicle comes in for other service and tell you they have an updated part that fixes X and they will install it "free of charge".

Or wait until *you* ask *them* if there is a TSB out on your vehicle's particular problem, and will fix it if you bitch about it enough

They all have been caught doing it, it's like Don't Ask, Don't Tell except for cars.
