East Ukrainian border post attacked from Ukrainian side

Source: Reuters

About 40 armed men attacked a Ukrainian border post on the frontier with Russia on Thursday and tried to seize control of it, but were beaten off by Ukrainian forces, the border guard in Kiev said.

It said two minivans arrived at the border as if about to leave Ukraine at the Izvarino crossing point in the eastern region of Lugansk, a hotbed of pro-Russian insurgency. The men jumped out of the vehicles, surrounded the post, pointed their rifles and demanded guards lay down their weapons.

The border guards refused and opened fire, the assailants replying with petrol bombs. The attack ended with the men fleeing. The Border Guard office said steps were being taken to reinforce the post.

It's always a false flag. Pearl Harbor, Sept 11, you name it. Hardly surprising that an incident like this immediately draws folks who think like this.
I'm becoming more and more convinced that all Putin is engaged in now is an elaborate attempt to save face, which is not working real well. He's got his followers in eastern Ukraine all worked up, but he knows he won't invade because the sanctions he'd face post such a thing would truly cripple his economy. So, in an effort to keep the people he's put in impossible positions in the east happy, he keeps his troops on the border, and runs this gigantic military exercise, and I'm sure tomorrow's Victory Day parade will have lots of weaponry on hand.
None of which matters. If he invades he loses big time. If he doesn't, after a while his people will be on to him and then he's going to have a lot of explaining to do. Either way, he's painted himself into a corner.
