LOS ANGELES (AP) — Crews have vacuumed up most of about 10,000 gallons of crude oil that sprayed into Los Angeles streets after a high-pressure pipe burst.

Fire Capt. Jaime Moore says oil spilled early Thursday over approximately half a mile and was knee-high in some parts of the industrial area of Atwater Village near the border of Glendale.

A handful of commercial businesses were affected, as well as a strip club that was evacuated.

Moore says four people at a medical business were evaluated with respiratory complaints, and two people were transferred to a hospital.

A ruptured oil pipe near Los Angeles has caused a massive leak as 50,000 gallons of crude oil spilled onto streets.

The oil was reported to be knee-deep in some places in an area covering a half-mile in the West Glendale area.

The leak from a 20-inch pipe was first reported at around 12:15am local time.

Just goes to show, better coverage of US news in Brit papers. Believe me, this story, let alone the photo will NOT be posted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It has supported fracking across the state, and most recently editorialized to aggressively back fracking at the Pittsburgh airport and also along the boundaries of a beautiful park, which of course includes noise, air and light pollution, as well as thousands and thousands of semi trucks hauling fracking water w/undisclosed lethal chemicals, and fracking waste water back and forth through local neighborhoods.

WILMINGTON (CBSLA.com) — A broken pipe caused crude oil to seep onto the streets of Wilmington overnight Tuesday, officials said.

Hazmat units with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of oil flowing through cracks in the asphalt on the 1200 north block of Neptune Avenue at 7:00 p.m. Monday night, according to fire officials.

CBS2′s Joy Benedict reports neighbors started seeing liquid Monday afternoon and at first believed it to be water. They later contacted the fire department after realizing the liquid was, in fact, crude oil.

“You never expect something to start bubbling out of the concrete,” resident Naomi Payan said.

Our infrastructure is outdated as bad or worse than most 3rd world countries.
Unnecessary oil is being pumped through these brittle pipes. Well, if the oligarchs would allow us to switch to renewable (solar, wind, etc.) energy this (further) environment destroying oil would be unnecessary.

Why is this important?
It's important to include this because something like losing access to strippers and pole dancers could impact the sleazy lobbyists and the elected officials who accepted their bribes, oh, sorry, I mean "campaign donations" from Big Oil, Frackers, Keystone Pipeline, etc. First of all, it would interrupt their Legislators' Night Out. Secondly, what if someone photographed them running out of the club? Bad enough it happened in LA. What if it happened in DC? The resultant publicity would threaten the hallowed tradition of "What happens on this side of the Potomac stays on this side of the Potomac."

God knows they don't give a shit about poisoning the air and water, destroying the land re future livestock/farming, long-term health impacts on workers, neighbors, etc.

11. I never realised the industry would run 20inch crude oil transport pipes right through a suburb.

The people of America have no protections at all unless they live in a 'suburb' of Mansions.

13. Here in the DFW area we have lots of pipelines

and many of them are less than ten years old. There are plenty from many years ago and I'd guess about half of them are still active. Suburbs and neighborhoods are built around them and you can see (once you know what you're looking for) evidence of them from aerial and satellite photos.

The newer pipelines - which mostly transport natural gas - are much less visible. You might be surprised to see where they are squeezed in between a road and a house or along the back of an affluent neighborhood or in a floodplain. Yes, it was easier to build pipelines in lower income areas, but around here nobody escaped being affected.

Off topic, but relevant to my area, I wonder if the natural gas in the pipelines from wellhead through the gathering system is odorized or not. The natural gas we transport in railcars is not odorized, so I suspect the stuff in the gathering system pipelines isn't either.
