House set to vote on measure to repeal America's post-9/11 war powers

Source: Guardian UK

A US congressman will launch a vote as early as Wednesday to repeal the US government’s vastly expanded post 9/11 war powers.

Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, has authored a measure that would force the expiration of the September 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force, or AUMF, the legal wellspring of America's so-called "war on terror", in one year.

The measure, offered as an amendment to the annual defense budget funding authorization, could come for a vote in the House of Representatives as early as Wednesday afternoon.

Schiff offered a similar measure last year that came about 30 votes short of passing the House. He told the Guardian on Wednesday that he was “optimistic” about it passing this time around, thanks to growing bipartisan discontent in Congress as terrorist threats have mutated in the 13 years since the law’s creation.

in the House and Tea Party adherents. The House GOP leadership is firmly against this but some Tea Party folks are on the right side of this issue. But having said that I don't think that the leadership would be allowing this to come to a vote if they thought the amendment had a chance of passing.

Would really like to know why, once this country gets into any kind of war, we are then stuck with troops stationed abroad in perpetuity. Not what they're talking about here but I think it comes from the same mindset. And if Islam collectively decided they've had it with their own extremists and suddenly decided to clean house and get rid of extremist groups like al Qaida and Boko Haram (wishful thinking, I know) what justification would they come up with to continue the war on terror? Because it's a virtual guarantee that many in Washington would be arguing for it.

That seems to be the why for everything. I'm starting to think we'd be better off abolishing money.
