Cliven Bundy is leaving the Republican Party

Source: MSNBC

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy has decided to leave the Republican Party, according to the Associated Press.

Bundy registered with the Independent American Party at an event in Las Vegas on Friday.

“I haven’t got much good out of the Democrats and Republicans so I decided to try a new one,” Bundy said, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.

The rancher became a bit of a conservative darling last month, drawing the praise of right-wing pundits and politicians alike after he made headlines for his dispute with the Bureau of Land Management over grazing his cattle on public land. Many of his conservative backers began distancing themselves from Bundy after remarks he made about “the Negro” in which he pondered about whether African-Americans might have been “better off as slaves” became public.

To do it, they have to stop allowing the GOP to pander to their extremist freak base out of one side of their mouth and pretending to be moderates for the low-information "center."

We could start by replacing "tea party" with "republican." There is no Tea Party. These people run with an (R) after their name. There no reason to keep giving the rest of them cover by pretending they don't own their extremists. Make them either own it, or deny them. Either way, it screws them over. Which is the point of a wedge.

Every time one of their extremists shoots their mouth off on TV, radio, twitter, facebook, youtube, whatever-the-hell, that should get put into a special file to be included in future campaign or issue ads. Like this special piece of work:

No idea how my son will die, but I know it won't be cowering like a bitch at UC Santa Barbara. Any son of mine would have been shooting back.

Fuck him. He is a piece of shit. His tragedy sucks, but he blamed me for it and wants to take away my rights. The guy is trying to take away my rights to protect my family. Fuck him every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

That shit is utterly vile, and we should make the GOP choose between apalling most people, or pandering to the vile ones. Historically they get to have it both ways, which is one major source of their success.

longer embrace him because of what he said, but you'll never convince me that they don't support him in their hearts. If the backlash hadn't been so fierce & immediate, he'd still be their "conservative darling".

They like him, it's just that his manner is too impolitic for them to win national elections. They certainly do in fact agree with him though.

was his attitude toward being abandoned by the right wing. He (rightly) assumed an attitude that amounted to "What the hell are y'all so mad about? I just said what everyone is thinking!"

Which is a good way to get abandoned by Republicans and other right wingers, because what they're thinking is usually pretty abhorrent, and they know saying it out loud costs them support.

If I were checking my bank balances, or checking my inbox for thank-you's and pats on the back and so forth.

But I'm sticking with the one that champions civil rights and social justice, that protects social programs that help those most in need, that protects the environment, and that considers the whole country and all its people as essentially worth the effort of governing well.

Its certainly not all about me.

He'll stay away just long enough to be left out of the mid-term election conversation, and so anything he does say does not sully the pristine Republican reputation in campaign season.

I'm choking back a laugh as I write this observation, but it's still pretty damned true: This is the modern-day version of the Republicans "tacking to the center" in an election year.

I'm still waiting for the Feds to prosecute someone in that affair. The contrast between the crackdown on Occupy and the lack of same against this crowd is killing me. Do we really need to start bringing weapons to protests to avoid pepper spray and arrest?
