The ongoing measles outbreak in the United States has reached a record for any year since the disease was considered eliminated nearly 15 years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday, with 288 cases of the potentially deadly infection in 18 states.
The largest measles clusters are in Ohio (138 confirmed cases), California (60) and New York (26), according to the CDC.

(8,747 posts)Is for some major outbreak of some contagious disease to cause the crippling, blindness or deaths of some of THEIR children.
OTOH, if someone else catches a disease from one of their unvaccinated kids, and sues the crap out of them, that might change their behavior also.

(109 posts)If your religion tells you not to vaccinate, if you think it causes autism, then you're arrested and forced to watch while your children are vaccinated. Stupid people do not have the right to endanger the rest of us, and those who are medically unable to be vaccinated themselves.
And by their own belief system, charge them with child abuse for feeding their kid a tuna sandwich. One sandwich contains 9 times the dose of a much more damaging and toxic form of mercury than the entire spectrum of childhood vaccinations combined.

(10,056 posts)I understand some of the concern about testing and the profit motive of Big Pharma, but these vaccines have been around for decades with few issues.
When your child becomes patient zero for an area you are the one to blame.

(2,433 posts)Not that I support McCarthy and the movement she created.... But doesn't anyone here bother to look deeper, instead of the easy go to of crucifying anti-vaccination? All I had to do was google Measles Mutation and it was enough to give me some pause in jumping on the band wagon.

Furthermore, does anyone consider that maybe a mfr produced a bad batch? Maybe the vaccine was outdated and not stored properly? Does anyone know how easy it is for the vaccine to be affected if not stored properly? Does anyone know how easy it is for someone to not store it or maintain chain of cold storage properly? If your cold storage is compromised and you have 2K worth of vaccines, do you toss it (and take the loss) or do you hope for the best?
No one here can definitively conclude what is causing the outbreaks. If you can, maybe you could enlighten me?
Seems we could all be just a little more critical?

"In the United States, the number of people who choose not to be immunized for religious, philosophical or personal reasons has begun to become a public health problem, Schuchat said. Others are unaware of, or unable to get, vaccinations before they arrive in the United States. A small number of adults can lose their immunity over time and may need to be re-vaccinated."

The experts interviewed in the article seemed to be able to "definitively conclude what is causing the outbreaks."
