System off Florida coast now Tropical Depression 1

ORLANDO -- An area of low pressure off Florida's Atlantic Coast is now Tropical Depression 1, according to the National Hurricane Center.

NHC ugraded Invest 91L just before 11 p.m.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the East Coast of Florida from Fort Pierce northward to just south of Flagler Beach.

This is the first tropical system in the Atlantic for the 2014 hurricane season. If it strengthens to a tropical storm, it will be called Arthur.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th and also ends November 30th.

13. Actually the NAMING of Hurricane starts January 1st, and ends December 31st

It is rare to have a Storm between November and June, thus the season "Begins" June 1st, but they have been named Storms before that date:

In 1978 you had an unnamed and unnumbered Tropical Storm between January 18 and 22:

2005 was the record year for Hurricane, it is the only time we went through the entire alphabet and had to start using Greek Alphabetical names, thus the last six 2005 storms (Which included TWO Hurricanes) used Greek Alphabetical names and that includes the LAST Hurricane in 2005:

Now the latest HURRICANE to form was on December 30th, 1954. It was called "Alice" for it was not ruled to be a Tropical Storm till January 2. 1955 and thus was called the first storm of 1955, instead of the last storm of 1954:
