US asks for more security at some foreign airports

Source: AP

The U.S. has ordered tighter security at some foreign airports offering direct flights to the United States, the Homeland Security secretary said Tuesday.

Intelligence officials are concerned about new al-Qaida efforts to produce a bomb that would go undetected through airport security, one counterterrorism official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly by name.

American intelligence has picked up indications that bomb makers from al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate have traveled to Syria to link up with the al-Qaida affiliate there.

Anyone who wants to know what security overkill is like, should try flying Manila Philippines to the US.You have to arrive 3 hours early. There are 3 separate security checkpoints to go through. Each one with an xray, scanner and metal detectors and "security" agents with handheld metal detectors.Your shoes have to be removed and scanned, even thought you are wearing flip flops.

Everytime you turn a corner at the airport, there is a new security checkpoint to go through.Years ago the US chastised the PI for lax security measures,so the Philippine government went totally over the top in response.Any more security, and you will have to bring a sleeping bag.

Guess the Philippine government didn't want to miss any of that free money that the US waves around when they want something done.
