Mandatory evacuation issued for Hatteras as NC braces for storm

WILMINGTON, N.C. - A mandatory evacuation of Hatteras Island has been issued for 5 a.m. Thursday, Dare County Emergency Management said Wednesday, as North Carolina's Outer Banks prepared for Arthur's approach.
All Hatteras Island residents and visitors were advised to leave as soon as possible in the daylight hours Thursday.
The evacuation notice came hours after Gov. Pat McCrory urged residents and visitors to "not put your stupid hat on" as North Carolina prepares for Tropical Storm Arthur, which is forecast to become a hurricane as it approaches the state.
At a news conference Wednesday in Wilmington, McCrory reminded people that most injuries and deaths occur before and after a storm. He urged people to not act selfishly, saying that if they put themselves in harm's way, they also endanger emergency workers who must try to rescue them.

The Dare County Control Group has issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents and visitors on Hatteras Island beginning at 5:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014. After 5:00 a.m. Thursday, no access will be allowed to Hatteras Island.
All Hatteras Island residents and visitors are advised to evacuate as quickly as possible during daylight hours on Thursday before the effects of Tropical Storm Arthur begin to bring high winds, rough seas, dangerous rip currents, and the potential for water and sand overwash on NC Highway 12.
A State of Emergency has been issued for all of Dare County with the only restriction being the mandatory evacuation of Hatteras Island.
Visitors should evacuate with all personal belongings and follow instructions offered by their property management company.

He talks the good talk...Tough and yet a bit Southern Gentleman....(even thought he isn't of Southern Heritage)...yet LURKING in background is exactly the kind of figure both Tea Party and Long Standing Conservative Repugs and Dems....would take a good look at.
NEW SOUTH ......all the way with him. Until one scratches the surface about what the "New South" is truly about...and it ain't pretty...

(13,685 posts)A beautiful cool weekend is in store.
As for the OBX ... if the storm races off to the NE as expected, the flooding will be minor and wind damage at a minimum.
But ... if Aurthur slows down and blows easterly winds onto the coast for a full day, there will be much damage, by both flooding and wind.
If i was a lot younger i'd be grabbing my surfboard and heading for the coast. Being in a tropical storm with the waves and wind and warmth is truly an earthly treasure.
As it is, the treasure of the mountains with mid 60's morns, green trees and blue sky will just have to be good enough for this old dog.

(10,493 posts)Don't wait too late because the traffic will crawl. It took 13 hours to go 60 miles when I evacuated from Rita. When Ike came around 2 years later I left much earlier, it's just not worth it to wait and see if it will turn away...

(31,961 posts)A tropical storm warning was upgraded to a hurricane warning along much of the N.C. coast after the National Hurricane Centers computers nudged the predicted path of Arthur farther to the west, bringing the heavy rain and strong winds closer to the Carolinas on the biggest tourist weekend of the year.
A hurricane warning is posted from Surf City, about 30 miles up the coast from Wilmington, to the northern Outer Banks town of Duck.

since we will not run the AC, just the window unit.
