Germany caught 'CIA double agent' with weather app on his computer
A suspected double agent under arrest in Germany has been spying for the CIA for two years, German intelligence officials investigating the case now believe.

The country's top security official has demanded a full American response to German investigations. "I expect everyone now to assist quickly in clearing up the accusations - and quick and clear statements, from the USA too," Thomas de Maiziere, the Interior minister said.

In a damning piece of evidence, investigators said they had found an encrypted communication programme hidden on his computer.
The hidden programme was disguised as a weather app, and activated by searching for a weather forecast for New York.

Convinced they were hunting down a Russian agent, they were astonished when he confessed he to spying for the Americans.

(57,936 posts)This is not a laughing matter. We rely on Germany to allow us the space from which we spy on a lot of the world. We are pretty dependent on Germany's good will
Besides, Germany is pretty much our best friend based on my experience living on the economy in various countries including the UK and Germany.

We spy on our own citizens!

(57,936 posts)Right. We are dangerously paranoid at the very top of our nation. We need to cool down and work with our allies better. Germany is our ally. As I have often said, it is the only country in Europe in which older men approached me to say thank you for our action in WWII. Yes. Numerous times. A typical story was that the man had been sent to the US as a prisoner of war, had worked on an American farm and had wonderful memories of that time. Amazing, huh?
Contrast that with Gitmo. Maybe the comparison is a bit unfair. But when we take prisoners of war for whatever reason, we have two choices. Do we cause them to see us more favorably or less favorably?
I wish our government would think about that.

This was something like our response when they found out the NSA was bugging Angela Merkel's personal cell phone, wasn't it?

(6,785 posts)but it was the response from the people that would have demanded a carpet bombing or nuclear strike if Germany had dared to spy on Obama.

I'm not sure what it is and I doubt anyone outside of the government knows, but for whatever reason, the U.S. is determined to spy on Germany and I figure they're not just wasting their time. The Germans know stuff or perhaps their closeness to Russia, allows for more intelligence gathering. Obama refuses to sign a no-spy pact with Germany like we have with the UK, Australia, and Canada.

(42,239 posts)BEIJING (AP) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that if allegations a German intelligence employee spied for the United States are proven true, that would be a "clear contradiction" of trust between the allies.
Merkel spoke Monday while visiting China about the arrest last week of a 31-year-old man suspected of spying for foreign intelligence services. German media, without naming sources, have reported that the man worked for Germany's foreign intelligence service and had passed on information to U.S. agents since 2012.
Speaking at a news conference with the Chinese premier, Merkel said, "If the allegations are true, it would be for me a clear contradiction as to what I consider to be trusting cooperation between agencies and partners."
