CLEVELAND, Ohio Capping off a months-long lobbying effort, Cleveland will be the host of the 2016 Republican National Convention, according to a Twitter post from a spokesman for the Republican Governors Association.
"RNC picks CLEVELAND for 2016 GOP Convention," reads the Tweet, posted by Jon Thompson, the press secretary for the RGA.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced Cleveland as the location on the Fox News Channel in a live, on-air interview.
"We're excited about bringing the convention to Cleveland in Ohio, and we're excited about the decision. We think it's a smart decision," Priebus said.

Republican Party picks Democratic stronghold for 2016 convention: political numbers for Cleveland, Cuyahoga County
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Republican Party is heading straight into enemy territory with its decision to hold the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Just how much historically has Cleveland and Cuyahoga County favored the Democrats? Consider these numbers:
The last Republican presidential candidate to carry Cuyahoga County was Richard Nixon in 1972.
The last Republican to win a Cleveland mayoral election was George Voinovich in 1985.
The 69.4 percent of the Cuyahoga County vote won by Barack Obama in 2012 was higher than any other county in Ohio.
The margin of victory for Obama over Mitt Romney in Cuyahoga County (256,613 votes) two years ago was big enough for him to overcome losing Ohio's other 87 counties by a combined 90,341 votes.
The 2012 election marked the fifth straight time the Democrat showing in Cuyahoga County increased. Bill Clinton received 60.8 percent in 1996; Al Gore 62.6 percent in 2000; John Kerry 66.6 percent in 2004; and Obama 68.9 percent in 2008.

But that was so they can exploit 9/11 for political gain.

(94,503 posts)...it's not that voters get worked up by the choice of Convention. It's that the local political structure (supposedly) gets more energized.

(1,269 posts)We have a rich ethnic tradition and great sports teams. We have the world class museums, theatre, universities, and unions . We have the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, & a great downtown with great restaurants. A beautiful lakefront with all kinds of sport opportunities. Try the Cleveland Triathalon next time you're in town , dude. I'll race ya, it's right off the piers. We've got parasailing, hangliding, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming.
We've got great parks for hiking and whatever you want. I LOVE CLEVELAND. So, BACK OFF
Just have to think up a sign for this little problem. Last one said 'War, the Path of Osama'. That was in CLEVELAND during the run-up.

(9,148 posts)I don't see where holding their convention in Cleveland ups the odds for a win in Ohio.
I think by now people are either for the GOPteabaggers or they loathe them.
I do hope Cleveland makes a shit load of money off this ghastly grouping.
Anyone here have an online business for tee shirts, coffee mugs, sippy cups, souveniers etc.?
I's be capitalizing on the ignorance of the GOPeebaggers & selling some convention trinkets. Then make a great donation to a liberal cause & let the conventioneers know about it.
Oh my..just a rant.
I'd boil over if they were coming to Dallas. Hard to deal with the ones we have here on a daily basis.
Can't believe Ricky Perry lost this one for Texas..
Lobo27
(753 posts)For liberals its good if they ignore Texas. They may have also come to the conclusion that they are going to lose Texas at some point nationally, and want to focus on other states.
Though, I highly doubt that. Because if you lose California and Texas I don't see how you win elections unless you win much of the other states.

(9,148 posts)Maybe once Perry's gone from his endless tour as gov, we may see a gradual shift towards blueness. Hoping for it.

(5,166 posts)convention.
Not only would it be a coup for Ohio to land both 2016 conventions, but a Dem convention in Columbus could help mitigate or overcome any advantage Republicans would gain in Ohio.
Republicans were/are hoping to hold their convention earlier than usual - perhaps in June 2016.
Democrats have not announced such plans to move theirs up from the expected Sept. date.

(7,299 posts)These Republicans gerrymandered the state sequestering us Democrats in one huge northern district surrounded by numerous tiny rural districts. They effectively took our representation away from us. Now, despite closing many schools for budgetary reasons, Cleveland commits $50 million dollars to the same fools that brought this wrath upon us. My prediction: they'll rue the day they made this decision. When they're not in our casino or patronizing prostitutes, they'll be getting a face full of our Democratic rage. That's all I have to say about that.

As politicians and others scramble to board Clevelands convention-bound bandwagon, its important to remember who was there first.
Months before anyone of note was even talking about bringing either the Republican or Democratic conventions here in 2016, County Executive Ed FitzGerald was doing something about it.
And Republicans may not like it, but FitzGerald, a Democrat, deserves far more credit than any other elected official for the city landing the GOPs 2016 presidential nominating convention.

(130,865 posts)because they haven't won the state in which they've held their convention in MANY years. (I forgot how long, DUers probably have that date at our fingertips, as I think I read it here.)
And as OHIO goes, so goes the Nation! (almost. It used to be MAINE!)

Year Convention site Party Win in previous election? Convention year?
2004 New York Republican No No
2004 Boston Democratic Yes Yes
2008 St. Paul Republican No No
2008 Denver Democratic No Yes
2012 Tampa Republican No No
2012 Charlotte Democratic Yes No
In four of the last six examples, the party didn't win the state in which the convention was held. In only one case Denver, 2008 did the party win a state it had lost in the previous cycle.

(9,974 posts)Kinda hard to hide from Perry and Dubya down here. Think they would want Perry around after his joke of a campaign in 2012? And did they really want Dubya within driving distance? No delegate would want to be seen in Dubya's library that is here.
Plus surely they knew Dallas is really a Dem stronghold. No county wide office held by a repuke since 2006, I believe. How would they explain all the Dem protestors that no doubt would have surrounded the repuke convention...especially in...gasp....TX?
