GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) The Israeli military launched a major offensive in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday, striking more than 100 sites and mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion in what Israel says is an operation aimed at stopping a heavy barrage of rocket attacks from the Palestinian territory.
At least 15 Palestinians, including three children, were killed in the attacks from air and sea, Palestinian medical officials said.
The military said the open-ended operation aims to deliver a blow against the Islamic militant group, and end the rocket fire that has reached deeper into Israel in recent days.
"It won't end in a day and it won't end in two days. It will take time," Yitzhak Aharonovitch, the country's Cabinet minister for internal security, told Channel 2 TV, during a visit to the rocket-scarred southern city of Ashkelon.

Israel launched what could be a long-term offensive against the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday, the military said, striking at least 50 sites in Gaza by air and sea and mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion aimed at stopping a recent barrage of rocket attacks against Israel. The army said its offensive, dubbed "Operation Protective Edge," is aimed at striking Hamas and ending the rocket fire that has intensified in recent weeks amid tensions over the killing of three Israeli teenagers and the apparent revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager. (12,977 posts)The story starts off, "The Israeli military launched a major offensive in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday, striking more than 100 sites and mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion ..."
The headline is set up to make it sound as if the "major offensive" was a matter of Israel defending itself against a "seaborne attack." But you don't find out anything about that attack until you get two-thirds of the way down in the story and finally learn, "Late Tuesday, Israeli troops shot and killed four militants who tried to infiltrate a military base in southern Israel by sea. Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman, said the attackers made it ashore and attacked the base with grenades and assault rifles. An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded."
So what it amounts to is that a week ago, even before the discovery of the bodies of the three Israelis and everything that followed, there was a minor incident involving four militants who attacked an Israeli base. And that's being positioned in the headline as though it was the cause of the Israeli bombings which killed at least 15 Palestinians and the plans for a ground invasion.
How much more naked can it get?

(45,850 posts)Israeli forces on Tuesday killed a number of armed militants who came from Gaza by sea, an Israeli security source told AFP.
"A number of terrorists came out of the ocean and attacked the base with Kalashnikov rifles and hand grenades," spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said.
Soldiers at the base, near the Zikim kibbutz, responded. Ground troops killed two of the attackers, air raids a third and naval forces the fourth, Lerner said.

(3,746 posts)(Reuters) - Islamist militants in the Gaza Strip launched three rockets towards the southern Israeli town of Dimona and its nuclear reactor on Wednesday, causing no injury or damage, the Israeli military said.
One of the rockets was intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome defensive shield, and two others fell in open areas. None caused damage or injuries, an army spokesman said.
Militants from Hamas's Qassam Brigades said they had launched long-range M-75 rockets.
Other areas in southern Israel's Negev desert were also targeted, according to the Israeli military.
