Key GOP lawmakers collectively balk at White House request for border funds

Source: Raw Story

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Leading Republican lawmakers balked on Sunday at supporting a White House spending request aimed at bolstering the U.S. border with Mexico, where thousands of children have crossed recently, while calling for changes in the law to allow faster deportations.

The White House has asked for $3.7 billion in emergency funds to help pay for border security, temporary detention centers and additional immigration court judges to process asylum cases.

The Obama administration warned lawmakers on Thursday that border security agencies would run out of money this summer if the request was not approved.

Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican, said when asked about the spending bill that the priority had to be stopping the flow of children and teenagers from Central America to the United States.

“The best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to the country of origin,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “As soon as they (parents) see their money is not effective in getting their kids to this country, it will stop.”

Nobody booking these shows ever seems to get tired of their favorite "regular". Never mind that the rest of us do - and already have.

Last time I looked, there were 100 Senators. There were actually some Democrats in there, too! Did you know that? You wouldn't have any idea if all your information came from these Sunday shows. The Senate actually, MUCH to my surprise, has other Senators in there besides just john mccain! Wow!

Then why is he the only one we consistently get force-fed?

I did Perry's work over the weekend by contacting my Congressional members in Texas. Why doesn't Perry gather up the Texas members and go to the border with them. OOPS, didn't think about doing like this.

But I do on this. That's an outrageous number. I don't see why this needs to be so expensive. Just set up some temporary processing stations, send them through and put them on military transport planes back to wherever they came from. There's no need to spend billions on this, we need that money to fix our own problems. Not that the Republicans will actually spend money in the right places but I don't mind them refusing to spend it in the wrong places.

To have a hearing, you've got to have a judge, etc. are you beginning to see the problem?

All you need are some temporary processing facilities like tents or trailers, bring in the judges and streamline the process. There's no reason why this has to be a prolonged, arduous ordeal. We could have this cleared up in a week or two if done right.

I don't mind the amount if it goes to help the kids. I'd like to see a breakdown of how they are going to spend it. My guess is half of it will never leave Washington.

Yes, there is a huge problem about the kids flooding over the border. Why wasn't this addressed earlier before it got so out of control? And yes, congress could "tweak" the law to make it easier to send them back. But the Repubs are loving seeing Obama swinging in the wind and they won't do anything. If Obama acts without congress, then they will scream that he is exceeding his authority. It will be interesting to see how Obama handles this.

In the meantime these kids need help. Have you seen the pics of them laying wall to wall on the floor? Or read about the brutal murders and rapes that are forced on the young kids. It must be terrible for a mother to make the decision to let her child make this dangerous trip alone. Makes me think of that book "Sophie's Choice". And in the general scheme of things, 59,000 children can be easily absorbed by the 312,000,000 people in the US. That amount is a ....

Yes, we have to stop the flow, but at the same time, we must help the children that are here.

I saw the pic of our tough boy Gov Perry with asshole S.Hannity on the river with their big bullets. Looks like to me they are ready to gun down some of those little kiddies!

they would truly punish the republicans in November over this kind of shit.

They are screaming bloody murder over how big of a mess this is and how the president needs to do something, he goes to them with a plan asking for the funds to do it, and they refuse.

Rinse and repeat, literally dozens and dozens of times during his tenure they do this shit and it is completely obvious they don't have the first fucking care to actually HELP THE COUNTRY, it is all just mean, vindictive, hateful screaming at the president and in fact doing everything they can to NOT help the country just to screw with him.

But, people don't REALLY care ...

Send them back as adults once they have been educated. Send them back as doctors, lawyers, business men and women. If you want this "tide" of refugees to end, then change has to be made at the source and sending back a bunch of children who have absolutely no hope what so ever won't work.

These are just kids. They come from some of the worst places in the Americas. Deal with the issue now by helping them or you will end up with an even larger issue in the future. That is one thing that our country does not do well and Afghanistan back in the 80's is a really great example of that.

I can hear the argument now... "we have our own issues"...."they are illegals".... "blah blah".. With as much as we spend on defence we can certainly help the kids and keep them safe as well as fix our own issues.
