Obama to push road and bridge repair

Source: McClatchy

With a trust fund for highway repair about to sputter out, President Obama will spend the week pushing for increased investment in infrastructure, the White House said.

Obama, who has used his executive authority to speed up permitting for priority projects, will announce futher executive actions on infrastructure this week, the White House said.

Congress this week will consider a way to avoid a lapse in funding of the Highway Trust Fund, which is now scheduled to go insolvent as early as August, and the White House said Obama "will continue to urge Republican lawmakers to not block it."

House and Senate committees last week approved plans to shore up the foundering highway trust fund through next May, though several business groups have told lawmakers they want a longer-term solution by the end of this year.

And, as a frequent critic of the administration on other issues, I'm willing to bet that pretty much anyone who is critical of the administration on the left will also applaud this move.

So when, as they frequently are, the accusations that 'you can never say anything good about the president' are thrown yet again...

They can come here to find just the latest example of how they're actually wrong.

The President is pushing things Democrats want and believe in here, so he gets praise here, even from frequent critics.

Republican House is in such thrall to the Tea Party that it will refuse to shore up the Highway Trust Fund. This is not to knock Obama - he's dealing with some irrational people.

it is the business that want to privatize our interstate system. Once pukes "prove" that government can't keep these roads going, the push will be for privatizing them.

Public roads projects where I live have usually accompanied eras of corruption as government leaders have relied on illegal inducements to seek support from the usual field of naysayers.

Like all the smart set do.

(As I typed that, I imagined it being said in a "Mr. Howell" voice. Maybe that's what we need, caricatures of 1%ers like Mr. Howell and Lovey from Giligan's Island, to reduce the hero-worship the Republican rank and file feel toward their masters.)
