Rupert Murdoch Said to Have Made Offer for Time Warner

Source: New York Times

BREAKING NEWS Wednesday, July 16, 2014 7:07 AM EDT

Twenty-First Century Fox, the media empire run by Rupert Murdoch, made an $80 billion takeover bid in recent weeks for Time Warner but was rebuffed, people briefed on the matter said on Wednesday.

The bold approach could put Time Warner in play and might again ignite a reshaping of the media industry, prompting a new spate of mega-mergers among the nation’s largest entertainment companies.

Mr. Murdoch has built a global media juggernaut over nearly five decades spanning studios, television channels and newspapers, in part, by pursuing bold deals that were often rebuffed at first by the targets of his overtures, only to later acquiesce.

Not saying I was for that in the least, but Murdoch? Isn't that a violation of some anti trust law or something?

I'm overseas in Korea and we have tons of providers to choose from (and one of the fastest internet speeds in the world). If one isn't doing their job, fire'em and change providers.

None of this BS on the phone for an hour with a customer service representative talking down to people like their idiots.

Although I guess if you're over 80 and will never spend what money you have accumulated, power is all there is left to get you jollies.

Thanks for the info, by the way. I didn't even know HBO was part of the deal. We don't get HBO in Europe, so I never thought to check to see if they were owned by someone else.

For that matter, Maher and Oliver HAVE to be hot properties by now, so I'm sure their time in the wilderness will be minimal if even that.

Although if you have $80 billion at your disposal and don't know what to do with it, and have an insatiable appetite for power and influence, I guess you're driven to look for something to do. If he doesn't get his way here, he can always make a bid for Luxembourg, or something.

US media giant Time Warner has rejected an initial takeover approach from rival 21st Century Fox estimated at $80bn (£46.6bn).

The takeover approach by the Rupert Murdoch owned company was made last month, it was revealed.

Twenty-first Century Fox confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that its offer for Time Warner had been rejected.

It added it was not currently in talks with Time Warner about pursuing the deal further.
