Warren Buffett gives away a record $2.8 billion to charities

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Steve Jordon

Warren Buffett donated a record $2.8 billion in securities to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four Buffett family foundations, bringing his total contributions to the foundations over the past eight years to $18.7 billion.

In 2007 Buffett pledged nearly all his wealth to the foundations through annual contributions of his stock in Berkshire Hathaway Inc., or from his estate after he dies. As chairman and CEO, he built the Omaha conglomerate into the nation’s fourth-largest corporation over the past 55 years.

The latest contributions, reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday: $2.13 billion to the Gates Foundation, $213 million to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and $149 million each, or $447.6 million total, to foundations headed by his children, Susan, Howard and Peter.

Although Buffett donates a smaller number of Class B shares each year, this year’s dollar total was a record because the price of the shares has increased about 11 percent over the past year, from
about $115 to today’s $128.50 per share. The previous dollar record was last year’s $2.6 billion.

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

I'm not a religious person, but this bit of philosophy has always stuck with me.

Which ruthugians rarely donate to.

For instance, animal rescue groups need all the donations they can get.

Yes, I know, some Koch money goes to good causes but still -- in the scope of things.
