Senate Republicans filibuster bill to overturn Hobby Lobby

Source: TPM

SAHIL KAPUR – JULY 16, 2014, 2:35 PM EDT

Senate Republicans voted to block legislation on Wednesday to overturn the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby ruling and restore the legal right under Obamacare to cost-free contraceptive coverage for most female workers.

The procedural vote was 56 for, and 43 against, falling short of the needed 60 to defeat a filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) switched his vote to no at the end to reserve his right to bring up the bill again.

The bill, offered by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Mark Udall (D-CO), would narrow the Supreme Court's interpretation of the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act and forbid employer-based insurance plans from opting out of providing health services required by federal law. Democrats call it the "Not My Boss's Business Act."

The partisan divide in the Senate largely reflected the partisan divide in the Supreme Court, where 5 Republican-appointed justices ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby, while 4 Democratic-appointed justices ruled against the Oklahoma-based retain chain's request for an exemption to the law on religious grounds.

They knew this wouldn't pass but it's a campaign issue - and a damn solid one. Now, if we can just get women to VOTE (too many don't!)

Reid needs 50 other Senators to agree to wipe out the filibuster.

And, it's not exactly established that it's a good idea to get rid of the filibuster (Rs could take over next Congress).

This vote accomplished just as much as a filibuster free vote would have--not like it would have gotten a vote in the House anyways.

“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it, we’ll let your boss make your health care decisions for you!” Thus Republicans continue to dismiss women’s abilities to engage in critical thinking. No woman anywhere deserves to be treated with such medieval condescension, not even those women who still vote for Republicans.

Damned glad that Mark Udall is my Senator. This November is going to be intense.

My advice is find someone on DU that is creative and do it as a project, then post it on Youtube. If it goes viral it is worth much more than paid advertising.

... that's why they did it. Not all for naught, though. They'll just shelf it until the day when they CAN get it through. Then all they have to do is change some names and dates and whip it out for passage. Hopefully after this November! GOTV!

to the language of the bill, to see if Republicans would go on record with their tea party supporters looking on for supporting that corporations have the right to force shariah law on their employees. That might be dangerous for them to try and stop such a bill, especially in states like Oklahoma that tried to amend their constitution to explicitly forbid shariah law being practiced here!

Bring it up for a vote again and agaiin, along with votes to overturn Citizen United, increase the transportation fund and fuel job growth, cut the tax benefits for companies that move jobs overseas and institute a penalty for that, end the carried interest exemption, make all corporations pay at least sa minimum tax. These are all favorites of most Americans and will prove to be good tools for running against the traitorous Repugs.
