Missing Air Algerie plane from Burkina Faso has crashed: Algerian official

An Air Algerie flight crashed on Thursday en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, an Algerian aviation official said.

There were few clear indications of what might have happened to the aircraft, or whether there were casualties, but Burkina Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago said it asked to change route at 0138 GMT because of a storm in the area.

"I can confirm that it has crashed," the Algerian official told Reuters, declining to be identified or give any details about what had happened to the aircraft on its way north.

Almost half of the passengers were French citizens, an airline official said.

MH17, Flight 222, and now AH5017. Total dead well over 400 people. Could be over 450 if this is a total loss.

The last contact Algerian authorities had with the aircraft was at 01.55am GMT when it was flying over Gao, Mali, an Algerian official said. A diplomat in the Malian capital Bamako said that the north of the country was struck by a powerful sandstorm overnight.

The Burkina Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago said the flight asked to change route at 01.38am because of a storm in the area.

Meanwhile, the BBC is reporting that UN troops in Mali believe the plane has come down between Gao and Tessalit.

From the BBC:
The pilot had contacted Niger's control tower in Niamey to change course because of a storm, correspondents say.
...
Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal reportedly told Algerian radio: "The plane disappeared at Gao (in Mali), 500 kilometres (300 miles) from the Algerian border."

UN troops in Mali say they understand the plane came down between Gao and Tessalit, the BBC's Alex Duval Smith in the Malian capital Bamako reports.

In the headline, at least. In the article, they still refer to the plane as missing.

The plane's flight path would have taken it over some disputed territory, but I doubt that the local forces have the sort of firepower needed to bring down aircraft.

France scrambles 2 fighter jets to search for missing plane

Burkina Faso's transport minister says five Canadians were among those onboard an Air Algerie flight that officials said disappeared from radar over northern Mali after heavy rains were reported.

The plane was carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso to Algeria's capital, according to the plane's owner and government officials in France and Burkina Faso. Nearly half of the passengers were French.

Air navigation services lost track of the MD-83 about 50 minutes after takeoff from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, at 9:55 p.m. EDT Wednesday, the official Algerian news agency APS said.

In June, the US Federal Aviation Administration, the country’s chief aviation regulator, banned US airlines from flying below 24,000ft over Mali because of concerns about “small arms, rocket-propelled grenades, rockets and mortars and anti-aircraft fire”. It also warned of shoulder-fired missiles.

The wreckage of Air Algérie flight AH5017 from Burkina Faso to Algeria has been discovered in Tilemsi, Mali, with 116 people on board.

The French media is quoting Zoheir Houaoui of Air Algérie saying the plane was carrying 50 French passengers, six Algerians, one Malian, one Belgian, two from Luxembourg, five Canadians, one from Cameroon, four Germans, one Nigerian, eight Lebanese, one Romanian, 24 from Burkino Faso and six so far unidentified passengers. The six crew – two pilots and four stewards – were all Spanish.

a long way away from where they had said they lost contact.

On edit: Ouagadougou airport site says:

Les forces françaises stationnées au Mali ont détecté l'épave de l'avion AH5017 à mi-chemin entre Gao et Kidal, dans une zone désertique très difficile d'accès. L'impossibilité pour les secours spartiates des équipes médicales de Gao d'accéder à la zone rendent tout secours dans la journée très hypothétique. La nécessité de sécuriser la zone et d'en empêcher l'accès à tout personnel non formé aux contingences des enquêtes aériennes laisse redouter une issue dramatique.

That's more consistent with the "north of Gao" area given orginally: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Kidal,+Mali&hl=en&ll=16.993755,-1.175537&spn=6.049268,10.821533&sll=16.212037,-4.11438&sspn=1.519081,3.751831&oq=kidal&t=h&hnear=Kidal,+Mali&z=7

However, that same site has the "Mariela Castro onboard" story, which looks wrong, so they may not be that reliable.

Swiftair said on its website the aircraft took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 GMT and was supposed to land in Algiers at 0510 GMT but never reached its destination.

An Algerian aviation official said the last contact Algerian authorities had with the missing Air Algerie aircraft was at 0155 GMT when it was flying over Gao, Mali.

Aviation authorities in Burkina say they handed the flight to the control tower in Niamey, Niger, at 1.38 am (0138 GMT). They said the last contact with the flight was just after 4.30 am (0330 GMT).

Burkina Faso minister Ouedrago said the flight asked the control tower in Niamey to change route at 0138 GMT because of a storm in the Sahara.

However, a source in the control tower in Niamey, who declined to be identified, said it had not been contacted by the plane, which in theory should have flown over Mali.

Air Algerie wreck found in Mali: Burkina Faso army

Ouagadougou (AFP) - The wreck of an Air Algerie plane that went missing early Thursday with 116 people on board has been found in Mali near the Burkina Faso border, said a coordinator for the crisis unit in Ouagadougou.

"We have found the Algerian plane. The wreck has been located ... 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the Burkina Faso border" in the Malian region of Gossi, said General Gilbert Diendiere from the Burkina Faso army.

There are no survivors from the Air Algerie AH5017 passenger jet that crashed in Mali, says the French President, Francois Hollande.

Mr Hollande said one flight data recorder had been recovered, after French troops reached the crash site near Mali's border with Burkina Faso.
...
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told French radio network RTL that "the aircraft was destroyed at the moment it crashed".

"We think the aircraft crashed for reasons linked to the weather conditions, although no theory can be excluded at this point," he said.

If it was the weather, the recorders should have good evidence of that.
