An Air Algerie flight crashed on Thursday en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, an Algerian aviation official said.
There were few clear indications of what might have happened to the aircraft, or whether there were casualties, but Burkina Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago said it asked to change route at 0138 GMT because of a storm in the area.
"I can confirm that it has crashed," the Algerian official told Reuters, declining to be identified or give any details about what had happened to the aircraft on its way north.
Almost half of the passengers were French citizens, an airline official said.

(62,265 posts)MH17, Flight 222, and now AH5017. Total dead well over 400 people. Could be over 450 if this is a total loss.

(57,284 posts)In the headline, at least. In the article, they still refer to the plane as missing.
The plane's flight path would have taken it over some disputed territory, but I doubt that the local forces have the sort of firepower needed to bring down aircraft.

Burkina Faso's transport minister says five Canadians were among those onboard an Air Algerie flight that officials said disappeared from radar over northern Mali after heavy rains were reported.
The plane was carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso to Algeria's capital, according to the plane's owner and government officials in France and Burkina Faso. Nearly half of the passengers were French.
Air navigation services lost track of the MD-83 about 50 minutes after takeoff from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, at 9:55 p.m. EDT Wednesday, the official Algerian news agency APS said.

It also warned of shoulder-fired missiles.

(19,558 posts)The French media is quoting Zoheir Houaoui of Air Algérie saying the plane was carrying 50 French passengers, six Algerians, one Malian, one Belgian, two from Luxembourg, five Canadians, one from Cameroon, four Germans, one Nigerian, eight Lebanese, one Romanian, 24 from Burkino Faso and six so far unidentified passengers. The six crew two pilots and four stewards were all Spanish.

On edit: Ouagadougou airport site says:

That's more consistent with the "north of Gao" area given orginally: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Kidal,+Mali&hl=en&ll=16.993755,-1.175537&spn=6.049268,10.821533&sll=16.212037,-4.11438&sspn=1.519081,3.751831&oq=kidal&t=h&hnear=Kidal,+Mali&z=7
However, that same site has the "Mariela Castro onboard" story, which looks wrong, so they may not be that reliable.

(19,558 posts)An Algerian aviation official said the last contact Algerian authorities had with the missing Air Algerie aircraft was at 0155 GMT when it was flying over Gao, Mali.
Aviation authorities in Burkina say they handed the flight to the control tower in Niamey, Niger, at 1.38 am (0138 GMT). They said the last contact with the flight was just after 4.30 am (0330 GMT).
Burkina Faso minister Ouedrago said the flight asked the control tower in Niamey to change route at 0138 GMT because of a storm in the Sahara.
However, a source in the control tower in Niamey, who declined to be identified, said it had not been contacted by the plane, which in theory should have flown over Mali.

...
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told French radio network RTL that "the aircraft was destroyed at the moment it crashed".
"We think the aircraft crashed for reasons linked to the weather conditions, although no theory can be excluded at this point," he said.

If it was the weather, the recorders should have good evidence of that.
