Putin meets leaders over Nagorno-Karabakh

Source: AP-EXCITE

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has met separately with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia as concerns mount over the escalation of fighting around Nagorno-Karabakh.

Kremlin spokesman Dmtiry Peskov was quoted as saying that a joint meeting of all three leaders on Sunday was possible.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a part of Azerbaijan but it and some surrounding territory have been under the control of Armenian soldiers and local Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended a separatist war. Since then, there have been sporadic clashes, but tensions have risen sharply in the past week as 19 soldiers were killed, 13 of them Azeri.

Years of diplomatic efforts under the auspices of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe have made little visible progress in resolving the dispute.

One of those handy frozen conflicts that seem to be all the rage these days in the Russozone. When you need a conflict, just thaw and serve. They can be re-heated and re-frozen as many times as necessary.

The Tsar's didn't just subjugate people, they force-ably removed populations and colonized with differing ethnic groups. A practice continued with the Soviets....who also redrew borders. With the collapse of the Soviet Union...none of this was addressed. It was basically...ok...former soviet state becomes abc nation....and that's it.

Do you divide these areas of land mass based on ethnicity? Like the Balkans?

Do you eject people and resettle them? And hope nothing happens like a certain situation in the middle east?

Put certain minorities into "Reservations" in the larger nation? Much like what has happened in North America?

No easy solutions. And like this one, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting over territory before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic.
