Poll: Majority Says Don't Deport Children, Contra Obama And GOP

Source: TPM

By SAHIL KAPUR Published AUGUST 11, 2014, 10:06 AM EDT

Most Americans say unaccompanied minors arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border should be allowed to stay at least for a while, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Fifty-one percent of Americans surveyed said they shouldn't be deported, a figure that cuts against the views of the Obama administration and congressional Republicans, who disagree about how to treat them but agree that they should be sent back quickly.

Of the 51 percent, 38 percent said the U.S. should care for the children until it was safe for them to return to their home countries, while 13 percent wanted to let them stay.

Thirty-two percent of Americans said the undocumented children should be swiftly deported.

the people who purport to represent them. This comports with the fact that we're more liberal on social issues than the sold-out occupants of our political offices. I take considerable solace in this fact, although I don't know how to get the popular will to manifest in our policies in the world.

Most polls show Americans to be generally more progressive than the parties who run campaigns, and the candidates they offer. This has apparently been the case for a long time. I too have no solution to offer that might allow people to have real electoral choices that reflect their actual views. The problem seems to involve allowing corporations and oligarchs to buy parties, politicians and public information channels. The only thing I can think of that would help is to reduce the amount of money in the U.S. political system. Good luck with that. Sigh.

I could not be sure.

The crazies seem to get all the airhead time. Just like the tea Party conventions early on. But the fact that no one came a year later was never covered.

need to stop worrying about Hillary and look at the here and now and vote to remove their rethug Senators and congress people. And they also need to realize that it takes $$ to "care for the children" and to find facilities to house them. This requires that Congress pay for it through legislation (outside of any charities willing to pick up the tab).... and with the House in rethug hands, it ain't gonna happen. And no, the various executive branch agencies can't willnilly re-direct money to do this if it hasn't been specifically authorized for it. Otherwise it would be a violation of the Anti-Deficiency Act.

Should I restate it? 13% want the kids to stay permanently. Everyone else wants them to go back.

Or any of the other places where they will be placed with their relatives, who paid the coyotes to bring them to the US.
