Lauren Bacall -- one of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood -- is dead ... TMZ has learned.
A family member tells us Bacall had a massive stroke Tuesday morning at her home.
Bacall -- who famously starred with and married Humphrey Bogart -- starred in a slew of movies, including "The Mirror Has Two Faces," "How to Marry a Millionaire" and "Designing Woman."
One of Bacall's biggest movies was with Bogart -- "Key Largo" in 1948.

(102,096 posts)Of course she had lived a very long life, but on top of Robin Williams' tragic death... this just seems all the more poignant.
Heaven knows, a massive stroke sufficient to cause death is a kinder way to go out, I must say... RIP, Ms. Bacall.

First thoughts were about how I liked her way back when I was a little kid and that she had a long life. Condolences to her family and those who loved her.

(13,536 posts)attracted to women that smoked when I was a smoker. Too bad now, that part. A lot of girls probably started smoking because of those scenes but you can't blame her. Whatever actesses turned down those roles or were next in line would have done the same thing.
I liked her in the John Wayne movie "The Shootist". She was the lady that put him up in her boarding house. She was still looking great at whatever age she was then.

(1,805 posts)for her too. He's always liked that 40s sort of look. My mom was super pretty, if I do say so - I'll have to post a pic sometime, she had that look when I was young. I think that's half the reason my (now) husband asked me out. She went to Hollywood High which impresses my granddaughter to no end. She was offered a movie contract, but my dad said no way. Thank goodness that sexist attitude, while not gone by any means, is better. I carry her student body card in my wallet.
Lauren was not only so sexy and gorgeous; she was an amazing actress. I know this doesn't count to anyone but our family and friends, but my sweetheart of a SIL died from pancreatic cancer two days ago. What a shitty week!!!

(14,093 posts)From a Larry King interview:
KING: Wait a minute. Are you a liberal?
BACALL: I'm a liberal. The L word!
KING: Egads!
BACALL: I love it. Being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal. You do not have a small mind. Little picayune things. You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, little picayune thing.
KING: You're open to...
BACALL: You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, I'm a Roosevelt. I'm a -- and I hear anyone say anything about FDR...
KING: You're a new dealer, fair dealer.
BACALL: I'm a total -- and I was a kid and I'm total, total, total liberal and proud of it. And I think it's outrageous to say the l word. I mean, excuse me. They should be damn lucky that they were liberals here. Liberals gave more to the population of the United States than any other group.

(40,416 posts)Bacall and Bogart first did Key Largo and To Have and Have Not. They were life long lovers after that. Bacall was quite young. I imagine Bogie became much younger, too.
Love is like that. Yup! It is.

(28,552 posts)... it was The Big Sleep that I was referring to. You could see the sparks sizzle off of Bacall in that one.

(5,927 posts)She was in a class all her own. A great lady. A great liberal.
She and Bogey protested the McCarthy trials. Not much of Hollywood was classy enough to do that.
Decades ago I was in NYC and checking the jazz selection at Tower Records. Suddenly I realized the lady browsing next to me was Ms. Bacall. I was so tempted to say hello to her, but I was a bit shy and I also thought she was entitled to her privacy.
She dug jazz too.....class all the way.
Cross gently, Ms. Bacall.

Ah, I love those b&w movies.
Again, rest in peace Lauren.
