White House in the dark over arms supplies to Israel: report
Source: AFP/Yahoo
Washington (AFP) - Israel secured supplies of ammunition from the Pentagon last month without the approval of the White House or the State Department, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Since officials there were caught off guard as they tried to restrain Israel's campaign in Gaza, the administration of President Barack Obama has tightened controls on arms shipments to Israel, the newspaper said, quoting US and Israeli officials.
But the case illustrated that the White House and the State Department have little influence over the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the paper said, quoting officials from both countries.

(24,979 posts)And see that not as the establishment of a state with the MIC in the driver's seat, but a confirmation of what had already been true since the big war. Not that the White House tail hasn't also often wagged the MIC dog, but usually it was in a way that pleased doggie. Doggie happy!

(39,215 posts)appears that the MIC is part of it. If we the people do not get control of this mess including the MIC, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, and local police forces we are going to find ourselves in a self made prison called the USA. I don't know how we are ever going to fix this mess.
the MIC IS it.

While in Ferguson - police state willfully dips into their cache of arms - to strip freedoms.
You think bibi came over personally and just stole the weapons? Is this really what DU has been reduced to?

(45,850 posts)however I'm glad to say you're wrong Obama has already nixed the sale of the Hellfires now if you wish to go on about Congress doing some sort of maneuver around the Democratic POTUS be my guest

Assigning emotion (that isn't there) to a fact based post? About what I've come to expect from you. And yes, the congress - whose job it is to approve arms deals - will go around the President. You can count on it.
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)and assigning emotion that isn't there if not then why so adamant?
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)I stated a fact and you attributed emotion to it because that's what you do. Then you do it again by calling a follow up factual post with being adamant. You're getting your hopes up for nothing as this is not the President's call. I have no idea why pointing out facts has you in a tizzy.

The report depicted a context of poor relations between Obama and Netanyahu and claimed that the decision to halt the weapons transfer was made at a point when the White House and State Department became "increasingly disturbed by what they saw as heavy-handed battlefield tactics that they believed risked a humanitarian catastrophe," in Gaza.

Congress authorized the stockpile, which is now worth about 1.2 billion.
Looks like President Obama denied the Hellfires, but 40mm grenades and small arms nearing their expiration date were transferred without Congressional or Presidential authorization as a routine sourcing transfer.
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)After the shipment of the 120-mm and 40-mm rounds caught the White House by surprise, the Pentagon was instructed to put another arms shipment to Israel - a large number of Hellfire missiles - on halt and the administraction instructed all of its defense agencies to consult with the White House and State Department before approving any additional arms requests from Israel, the Journal reported.
A US official told the paper that "the decision to scrutinize future transfers at the highest levels amounted to the United States saying 'The buck stops here. Wait a second
It's not OK anymore.'"
