White House “Did Not Know” National Guard Was Being Deployed In Ferguson
No “heads up” from Missouri’s governor.

WASHINGTON — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon called the National Guard to Ferguson late Sunday without letting the White House know first.

“Folks didn’t know,” an administration official told BuzzFeed Monday. “The White House did not know they were sending it in.”

Nixon gave “no heads up,” the official said.

President Obama is back at the White House today on a pre-scheduled break from his August vacation in Martha’s Vineyard. He’s scheduled to be briefed by Attorney General Eric Holder on the situation in Ferguson early this afternoon. Holder and the administration have been critical of the militarized response to protests in Ferguson.

Why would he need the president's permission?

they weren't told about it. It's probably a protocol thing, the president being informed that something is serious enough to warrant calling out the national guard.

Which makes this story a gratutious dig at Obama's alleged "lack of leadership" in this situation at best.

overseas deployment? It seems that those units are ultimately under the control of the CinC? If they are being deployed for a domestic issue, then they are not available for overseas deployment. At a minimum some sort of notification of the SecDef should happen. The federal budget funds a large part of those units (for an article about Alabama the funding number is greater than 90% for the feds).

so Gov Nixon activating the Guard would have no impact.

Until or when the National Guard is Federalized, a State Governor has sole control of their respective State National Guard units.

This is pretty much a non story designed to either make Gov Nixon look bad or make the President look bad.

But notification is key, in case those troops might be needed elsewhere. Helps planners know what resources are and are not available.

Like responsible, intelligent public servants behave. Evidently Nixon is not one of such.

machine, he might have called out of no more than courtesy. Maybe the governor didn't want a friendly reply from the White House something to the effect "we'd rather you not do that at this time...". Now, the governor has put himself in an untenable position: he either offends the president, or offends the public. Anyway, this is just a thought..

Then STOP the Feds from giving Pentegon weapons to every police force large and small.
You 'give' them billions in military weapons and then grumble if they use them.
Better off destroying or mothballing them instead of giving all these
Barney Fifes bigger pockets for bigger bullets.

and the cost of deploying the National Guard, on top of the costs for all the additional local and state police, is mounting by the hour. So who is paying for this out-of-control military costume drama?

Is the governor going to cry poor and try to extort taxpayer money from the federal government to pay for his boondoggle, or is he going to sock it to the impoverished citizens of that wretched state by cutting funding to vital community programs and services?
