Saudi Arabia executes four for hashish possession

Source: BBC News

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have executed four members of the same extended family for drugs possession.

The two sets of brothers were killed on Monday in the south-eastern city of Najran after being convicted of receiving large quantities of hashish.

The case against them was reportedly based on confessions extracted under torture, Amnesty International said.

There had been a "disturbing" surge in the use of the death penalty in the kingdom, the human rights group added.

There have been 17 executions in the past two weeks, compared with 17 in the previous six months.

In 2013, the Saudi authorities executed at least 79 people, three of whom were under 18 at the time of the crimes for which they were condemned.

The death penalty can be imposed for a wide range of offences[2] including murder, rape, false prophecy, blasphemy, armed robbery, repeated drug use, apostasy,[3] adultery,[4] witchcraft and sorcery[5] and can be carried out by beheading with a sword,[6] or more rarely by firing squad, and sometimes by stoning.

The 345 reported executions between 2007 and 2010 were all carried out by public beheading.[7] The last reported execution for sorcery took place in 2012.[8] There were no reports of stoning between 2007 and 2010,[7] but between 1981 and 1992 there were four cases of execution by stoning reported.[9]

Crucifixion of the beheaded body is sometimes ordered.[5] For example, in 2009, the Saudi Gazette reported that "An Abha court has sentenced the leader of an armed gang to death and three-day crucifixion (public displaying of the beheaded body) and six other gang members to beheading for their role in jewelry store robberies in Asir."[10] (This practice resembles gibbeting, in which the entire body is displayed).

you can pretty much accuse anyone of one of those things and its off with their heads.

do residents in the middle east really want to live in countries like that? ISIS is even worse - as hard as it is to believe and yet 15% of the youth in France support them.

There has to be a planet somewhere in this universe with sane, rational, caring, sharing, loving beings.

Why are the most evil among us always in positions of power ???

somewhere around 1973 we encountered a disturbance in the force that warped the course of history. What should have been the Greening of America became instead the Grinding Down of the Planet and the Rise of the Theocrats. WTF. What could have been, and what actually happened are so far apart at this point that the best explanation is that we are living in an alternate universe from the one we started out in.

than others. Marx was right about religion. They're just cults with nice sounding names. Why don't they identify themselves more accurately like the "We chop off heads for any reason." Witchcraft, sorcery, blasphemy? All the more reason to get off of oil and create distance from such barbarians.
Here's your religion of peace, right here.

or to Texas and Georgia - "We execute people even if they are likely innocent." -

or to Ohio and Oklahoma - "We execute people by experimental means that may or may not work - we'll see."

Anyway, you probably recognize this.

Were you just angry and unable to control the broad-brush attack on all Muslims? Or, are you just being a bigoted hypocrite for fun?

FYI: The word you attempted to wield is spelled primitive.

Death penalty statistics 2013: country by country

...

At least 778 executions were carried out in 2013 - up from at least 682 in 2012 - according to the latest global report from Amnesty International.

The report documents executions in 22 countries in 2013, a rise on the previous year when executions were recorded in 21 countries worldwide. The countries with the highest number of executions were China, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, USA and Somalia.

According to Amnesty International, China executed more people than the rest of the world put together- but as data on the use of the death penalty is considered a state secret, no exact numbers are recorded in the report. They state that the 778 figure does not include the thousands of executions carried out in China.
