Family Dollar rejects Dollar General offer

Source: AP-EXCITE

MATTHEWS, N.C. (AP) — Family Dollar is rebuffing Dollar General's takeover bid, citing antitrust issues. The discounter's board supports its existing merger with Dollar Tree.

Family Dollar Stores Inc. Chairman and CEO Howard Levine said in a statement Thursday that its board and advisers reviewed Dollar General Corp.'s offer and determined it wasn't reasonably likely to be completed on the terms proposed.

Dollar General declined to comment.

Family Dollar became a takeover target in part because of its business struggles. The Matthews, North Carolina company has been shuttering stores and cutting prices in hopes of boosting its financial performance. In June investor Carl Icahn urged the company to put itself up for sale.

Some may have no other options but in my area, the only real dollar store is Dollar Tree.

I think some of these 'dollar' names are misleading. One would think the two mentioned are really dollar stores but on my neck of the woods, I can do better at my grocery store.

I do make a list of things I can buy at Dollar Tree and go once a month or so. Some of their stuff is not worth it but if you know what you are buying, there are bargains to be had.

Dollar General and Family Dollar not so much.

Dollar Tree makes most of its money from the non-poor: their biggest sellers are open-stock quality glassware and party supplies. Family Dollar has a white-line warranty on everything they sell - as soon as that shit passes the first white line in their parking lot, they'll have nothing more to do with it. And you can see why, considering it's Cheap Chinese Crap that's so bad not even the Chinese will buy it. Come on: how poor do you have to be before dish soap that won't get the dishes clean, snack food that doesn't taste good and clothes that fall apart in the store are even slightly worth buying?
