Swing States poll: A shift by women puts Obama in lead

Source: USA Today

President Obama has opened the first significant lead of the 2012 campaign in the nation's dozen top battleground states, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, boosted by a huge shift of women to his side.

In the fifth Swing States survey taken since last fall, Obama leads Republican front-runner Mitt Romney 51%-42% among registered voters just a month after the president had trailed him by two percentage points.

The biggest change came among women under 50. In mid-February, just under half of those voters supported Obama. Now more than six in 10 do while Romney's support among them has dropped by 14 points, to 30%. The president leads him 2-1 in this group.

A poll is a poll, and we have 219 days to go. Still, Republicans are not helping themselves by attacking the gender that usually comprises a majority of the electorate.

See you on the campaign trail!

I don't like their method. It's pointless to clump all these swing states into a single poll because, as I've mentioned when Obama trails in the overall, he doesn't need to win every swing state to win the election. It's good he's winning by such a decisive margin and it does suggest he would cruise to reelection if the vote was held today, however, that two-point deficit got a lot of play last go around and it didn't concern me because we really didn't know where the deficit was coming from.

What I mean is that when you clump all these polls together, you're not looking at it on a state-by-state basis. So, Obama could theoretically lead in Virginia by 1 and trail by 4 in Florida. You don't know his leads, or deficits, in any of those states.

And as I originally said, he doesn't need every swing state to win the election. So, unless there is a breakdown of every state, it seems kind of pointless to publish these results.

and while somewhat interesting, is pretty much useless overall. It's neither a nationwide poll of the popular vote or a state by state poll, which as we all know is ultimately all that matters in the end.

So here are the states listed as "swing states" they polled:

Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin

Fine, fair enough. Those states will all be heavily contested.

But I would argue that NM and MI will hardly be swing states considering the margin last time and the lead Obama holds in those states' polls (though come to think of it I haven't seen a poll of NM). New Hampshire and Nevada have a small fraction of the electoral votes of say OH, PA, or FL. And what about, say MO? Yes, it will be a tough state to pick up but polling so far is very close and McCain won it by just a few thousand votes.

I also would be surprised to see WI switch, considering the last time it went for a republican was in '84. Obama won it by a significant margin in '08 though it has been close in '00 and '04.

Either way, the poll doesn't reveal much.

What ultimately gets them is their tendency to overreach. Hitler probably would have won if he hadn't invaded Russia. Japan probably would have done the same if they hadn't attacked Pearl Harbor.

The Roman Empire ultimately collapsed because they got too greedy and spread themselves too thin. The Soviet Union collapsed because they couldn't maintain their rigid repression in an increasingly open world.

And the Republicans are collapsing because their xenophobia, misogyny, and commitment to taking us all backwards 100 years will no longer work in an increasingly multicultural society.

A woman getting a driver's license (or an ID) in Florida is a crazy process. My mother never could have gotten one or voted as she was born at home and had no birth certificate. Every time a woman marries it gets more difficult. A woman must prove her progression of names, a birth certificate, a marriage license, divorce papers or death certificate - for each marriage. I was married twice and it was difficult getting everything needed - no copies permitted - must be originals. I never could figure out why Canada passed a law that women keep their maiden names - but now I know - it's much easier to prove their identities that way.

Women in states considering these onerous laws should start worrying.

- Napoleon.

I think the Dems did a pretty good job letting the Republicans ride their crazy train back to the 18th century. As usual, the most damaging moments for the Republican Party are when voters get an honest glimpse of who they really are and what they believe in.
