First photo damage in Napa California
Update from Local CBS:
AMERICAN CANYON (CBS SF) A magnitude 6.0 earthquake and at least 25 aftershocks rocked the San Francisco Bay Area early Sunday morning, centered in the Napa County town of American Canyon, causing widespread power outages in Napa, causing minor damage across the region, and forcing the CHP to close down a bridge on a major highway.
This was the largest quake to hit the Bay Area since the 6.9 magnitude quake hit Loma Prieta nearly 25 years ago.
Jessica Turner, from the U.S. Geological Survey, reports aftershocks of up to 5.0 are likely in the next week. There is only a 5 percent chance of a stronger quake during the next week.
The CHP is closing a bridge on Highway 37 in Vallejo while they inspect it for possible damage.
Widespread power outages are impacting Napa, and there are reports of minor damage across the region, mainly items falling off kitchen shelves and stores with broken bottles.

6.0 Earthquake Hits Bay Area
A strong earthquake was widely felt across the Bay Area early Sunday morning.
The earthquake measured 6.0 and was centered about four miles northwest of American Canyon, according to a preliminary reading from the U.S. Geological Survey.
There was no immediate report of damage or injuries

(10,419 posts)It looks like the damage to Napa/Vallejo is quite extensive though. We go up there all the time for nummies & to visit our wine clubs.
We'll stay away during the cleanup, but the the locals start to suffer from loss of business, so off we'll go once we get the go-ahead. Same with SF after Loma Prieta, NYC after 9/11, & New Orleans after Katrina.

(41,762 posts)According to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck at 3:20 PT Sunday morning.
The quake, the USGS says, was 6 miles south-southwest of Napa, and 8 miles north-northwest of Vallejo, California, and had a depth of 6.7 miles.
A quick look at Twitter (as one does) shows that people across San Francisco felt the early morning quake, including Appeal contribs and SF natives Violet Blue, who said I cant believe how long that earthquake was and Rain Jokinen, who said Uh yeah. That woke me up.

(67,032 posts)First earthquake I experienced was at work in SF on the thirty first floor of One California Street. At that height there was only a subtle quiet swaying motion. I was sitting at my desk, concentrating on my work when it dawned on me that my feet, although stationary, were gently moving right to left for some unknown reason. I looked up from my desk and I must have had this quizzical look on my face, my co-worker occupying the desk a few feet away mouthed the word..."earthquake". It did get a little scary for me at that point, realizing I'm near the top of this big building that is moving back and forth. During the time I lived in CA, I experienced all sorts of earthquakes. Mostly minor ones, but they are always different. Some are steady shaking, some start as a jolt followed by shaking, others a rolling motion like being in a boat on the water. However the nature of one, you never get use to them.
RKP5637
(67,032 posts)few times it happen I thought it was me, that I had drunk too much the night before or something. Then it struck me, these are very minor tremors. I used to look at chandeliers for a minor swaying. I saw that a number of times in my house.

The Loma Prieta quake in 1989 was 6.9. I don't want to get any closer to that intensity.
Once I determine that it's over, I immediately go to the USGS and fill out a "Did You Feel It" survey.

(36,215 posts)The Pfeiffer building is the oldest commercial stone building in Napa and was once home to the Barth Brewery in 1875, and the Stone Saloon and brothel in the 1890′s. It became the Sam Key laundry during Prohibition, and remained so for over 40 years. In 1976, the Andrews Meat Co. and Deli made its home in the Pfeiffer Building, until the business closed in 1999.

(31,683 posts)I was 'tricked' by my grandfather when we were out West visiting my mom's parents years ago - that he had 'moved the house' a few inches. In my six year old glory I believed him. The real trick was the aftershock he knew was coming. He asked me to come outside and see if he should move it over another inch. Then had me go back inside. After shock.
I got in trouble with my first grade teacher for lying - then it wasn't funny anymore.
But - I've never been in one that big. Just hope people are okay in CA tonight . . .

(41,762 posts)Three buildings were destroyed when a fire broke out at a mobile home park in the city of Napa early Sunday shortly after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck just northwest of American Canyon.
Firefighters were unable to battle the blaze after a water main broke when the earthquake hit at 3:20 a.m, said city fire Capt. Steve Becker.
Two blocks were evacuated near the fire at the Napa Valley Mobile Home Parkat 1040 Orchard Ave. near Mark Way, just off Highway 29. Water tankers were later brought in to control the blaze. Firefighters were unclear on how the fire started.
No one was injured in the fire, but several people were injured across Napa, Becker said.

The hospital has set up a triage tent and many people are still coming in, DeGier said.

(5,732 posts)I was born in Northern Ca. and have lived in the Sacramento Valley all of my life. There have been some big ones, like the one in the bay area in 1989, the Northridge Earthquake years ago in southern CA, One in Oroville in the 70s, one in Crescent City a long time ago. The big one in SF in the early 1900s. I have felt slight shakes from a couple and I know tiny ones happen all of the time , but myself personally, I have only been close enough to one in my life that I experienced any damage from first hand. That one was not in CA, but in Yellowstone National Park in 1962. I never really give them any thought.
I think in the next few years, the states that have a lot of fracking going on will experience some big quakes.
If I lived in the midwest, I would concerned about tornados, but I don't worry about earthquakes. Although there is severe drought in Ca. this year, long term, I worry more about flooding in the rainy years than I do any other weather related disasters. I lived through a flood in 1955 and it was traumatic.
