(26,257 posts)I can't think of a movie he made or appeared in where he wasn't top notch. He lived a long, rich life, and we are the poorer for his passing.

(6,384 posts)So much to love about this film it was a superb stage show before Attenborough filmed it, but the direction was so masterful, it's hard to believe it was his first film directing job. When I hear his name, "Oh, What A Lovely War" comes into my mind immediately.
Whenever politicians start sabre-rattling, this film should be mandatory viewing to make everybody think twice.

(1,399 posts)With Mia Farrow. An incredible movie about the British army turning over control of their colonial holdings in Africa. Attenborough did an amazing job as the British officer in charge.
And The Sand Pebbles! His other movie with Steve McQueen.
I was so disappointed when he quit acting (mostly) in favor of directing. Great director that he was, I have missed him on the screen all these years.

That is the sign a true actor, the ability to become the character one is playing.

(1,399 posts)Frenchy was the character. A true and fine actor, indeed.
There was also "Seance on a Wet Afternoon" with Kim Stanley. A role so different from all his others I had trouble believing it was him.
