Major Democratic operative joins Rick Perry legal team

Source: CNN

Texas Gov. Rick Perry added another high-powered lawyer to his team fighting a felony indictment against him, but this addition is just as much about sending a message than winning the case.

Mark Fabiani has deep ties to the Democratic Party and is best known for his legal and crisis communication expertise.

He guided President Bill Clinton in his White House years and also ran Al Gore's communications team during his presidential run in 2000.

As Fabiani signed on, Perry's defense filed papers in Travis County District Court requesting the indictment be dismissed, arguing the charges are based on "unconstitutional" statute.

Lawyer who oversaw and approved all the misappropriated state tax money from the cancer fund: creep running for republican governor who is now attorney general for Texas, Ted Nugent's hang-out buddy: Greg Abbott. The cancer fund manager is also indicted with a pretty clear case, believe me this is serious. Next indictment? Abbott.

Yes, this is serious - I hope justice (the justice of the real people, not the 1% justice) prevails.

they'll donate proceeds from legal fees to Democrats. That's how it's done. GOP money is just as green.

is not much different from the oldest.

It doesn't matter who you're in bed with as long as the payment is good.

Let him earn his pay. Bug him for contributions after.

(I think Perry is toast in any event)

But I wonder if the Old West hired guns also justified their existence on the grounds that "everyone deserves a good defense."

This is as much a political prosecution as the Siegelman case. Texas courts have already considered this law in Texas v. Hanson (1990). The courts said coercion charges were "unconstitutionally vague" and "had a chilling effect on the exercise of free expression."

The group that filed the original complaint, Texans for Public Justice, is not exactly jumping on board with the indictment.

Although we filed the complaint that triggered the Perry investigation, we don’t know exactly what evidence McCrum amassed for the grand jury. A trial would not only give Governor Perry his day in court but would let the public — and skeptical Beltway pundits — judge for themselves whether McCrum has the goods.

But I guess political prosecution is ok when it is on our side...

i don't care about this. i would have a problem if they were to do something like work for anti gay groups or anti choice groups and do legal work for them.

The sad thing about the Obama Presidency is the man has been betrayed by every group. Progressives started criticizing before he was inaugurated in 2008. The Right-Wing... well...we knew what they were going to do. But the ones I thought would give him the most problem would be the Democratic Party. Those that have been in office for 20 and 30 years that were part of the Clinton Administration should have been voted out. They are old, bitter and incompetent.
