U.S. stocks opened slightly higher on Tuesday as investors weighed the latest batch of corporate deal news and mixed economic reports on home prices and demand for big-ticket items. The Standard & Poor's 500 index held at 2,000, extending the prior day's gains.

KEEPING SCORE: The S&P 500 rose two points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,000 as of 10:02 a.m. Eastern. The Dow Jones industrial average added 32 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,109. The Nasdaq composite gained one point, or 0.04 percent, to 4,559.

GAMING PLAY: Amazon rose 1 percent in early trading after saying that it would buy video streaming company Twitch for $970 million in cash. The stock climbed $3.17 to $337.22.

SERVED UP: Burger King confirmed it has agreed to buy Tim Hortons of Canada for about $11 billion, a move that would give the fast-food hamburger chain a stronger foothold in the coffee and breakfast market. The stock rose 40 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $32.79.
