Palestinian joy after Gaza truce

Source: Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons, reporting from Gaza, said that the deal agreed an immediate easing of Israel's blockade of crossings into Gaza, and a gradual lifting of restrictions on fishing off the coast of the strip.

"The embargo will be lifted and the five border posts will see considerable changes, with the Rafah border crossing opening," he said in reference to the crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

Discussions on the creation of a seaport and airport will take place in a month, when indirect talks betwen Israel and Palestinians are scheduled to resume.

Ofir Gendelman, the Israeli prime minister's spokesman for the Arab world, said operations in Gaza were a victory for Israel. "Hamas gave in and accepted the same Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire it rejected until now. The reason for the change... air strikes," he said.

Mistreat someone long enough, and eventually any amount of "normalcy" looks like the greatest of gifts.

Not so directly as in threats of bombs and the sort no. But in the sense of a very violent person working very hard to control your life, punish you by harming other peopel you care about, and otherwise being.. .well, an abuser? yeah, i can easily imagine that, it was the first sixteen years of my life.

It's inexact - Like I said, no bombs, no homelessness, and it wasn't shared by millions around me... but i can relate on at least that small level.

I have had it pretty easy that way, but it breaks my heart to see a family (especially children) terrorized by an abuser.

A total of 2,142 people, most of them civilians including more than 490 children, have been killed in Gaza since war broke out on July 8. A total of 69 people have been killed on the Israeli side, nearly all of them soldiers.

...Which just happens to mostly affect fishing, since Gaza's port is kind of, you know, demolished.

...As is the water treatment plant, which means that it's not exactly save to surf-fish, either...

the relaxation of fishing restrictions and the border policies are different from the bare and unconditional ceasefire that was first being bandied around.

Certainly Hamas has improved its stocks from nearly having to call in the liquidators, which is where they were before the war began.

I think this war was expensive enough that Israel won't want to do it again too soon, and it was certainly expensive enough for Hamas. Hopefully it can lead to the same sort of detente that we have seen since the 2006 war in Lebanon.
