Homeland Security: Islamic State poses no specific threat within the United States

Source: Reuters

The United States is not aware of any specific threat to the U.S. homeland from Islamic State militants, the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday after Britain raised its international terrorism threat level.

Islamic State militants and their supporters, however, “have demonstrated the intent and capability to target American citizens overseas,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement. He noted DHS has taken steps over the summer to strengthen security at overseas airports with direct flights to the United States.

Johnson said he has spoken to UK Home Secretary Theresa May about Britain’s decision to raise its terrorism alert to the second-highest level. It is the first time since mid-2011 that Britain has been placed on this high of an alert level.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said there was no plan to raise the U.S. threat assessment level.

1. Wait just a minute, Rick Perry says Ukrainians have been arrested in West Texas.

He has the National Guard on the border to prevent more from entering, OOPS, he missed again.

2. Not ginning up fear and using it to boost personal political ratings, that is a change you can

believe in. Meanwhile the cons in Britain are playing the same old fear card.

Americans voted for a calm man in charge and it drives the war hawks and fear mongers batshit crazy.

US "homeland" (not a fan of that word) It's like, wtf? Explain how ISIS is a direct threat, but they just say it's what they heard someone on TV say. ISIS is a threat to in the region where they're waging war, but they are no more dangerous than any other extreme terrorist group from before. They *might* pose some threats directly to the US, but they won't be taking over US cities anytime soon. At most some lonewolf types might be able to pose some issues, but that's always been a risk. I think ISIS as a whole is more focused on the Syria and Iraq than anything else. But there are plenty of people trying to play up the threat. I suspect that's mostly just to score political points against the democrats, specifically Obama.

3. In other ISIS news...

Jake Tapper on CNN had a German(?) guy on tonight who said that while fighting ISIS the Free Syrian Army captured a laptop from an ISIS safe house. The laptop had apparently belonged to a chemist or chemistry student and contains information on developing chemical weapons including the possible use of bubonic plague.

(You be the judge.)

5. Just repeating history. It's low-tech and was intentionally used in the Middle Ages.

It exists in many places now, all they need are some infected hosts, as it's carried by fleas.

I doubt it hurt Mongols when they used it as a biological weapon while on retreat from Europe. All hell broke loose:

Of course, it wasn't like Europe was a great place at the time, though.

People may think bubonic plague is a bogeyman from the past. But it isn't really. It's found in wildllife in the southwestern USA:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1385127/Man-diagnosed-bubonic-plague-Americas-case-year.html

It is a well-managed state that prevents the spread of it. Note that Poland escaped the plague by quarantine, they did not permit their neighbors to enter and spread it:

So I don't think ISIS will have problems with this stunt and it could kill people. Only a strong, well managed nation can prevent it. And DHS has said that ISIS presents no danger to mainland USA.

Still, very creepy stuff.
