Omaha police dog dragged suspect away from gun in Wendy's robbery, official says

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Maggie O'Brien

An Omaha police dog dragged a wounded suspect away from his gun to make sure he couldn't again open fire upon officers during a Tuesday night robbery at a midtown restaurant, police said Friday.

Officer James Shade, a police spokesman, said Cortez Washington, who was shot multiple times by police, collapsed on his weapon. A K-9 unit officer commanded the dog to move him away from the gun.

Washington was then handcuffed. He was declared dead shortly after the robbery attempt at Wendy's at 43rd and Dodge Streets. A "Cops" TV show crewman was caught in the line of fire and also was killed.

Shade, responding to a media inquiry, said the dog didn't attack Washington.

The Wendy's restaurant at 43rd and Dodge Streets is seen here on Wednesday. Omaha Police officers shot and killed a crew member from the “Cops” television show and a robbery suspect here Tuesday night.

They should be as well trained as their dog but apparently they're not.

if this individual was robbing this wendy's, fired at the police with a realistic looking handgun, then he is dead by his own fault. If 30 shots were fired by the responding police, that seems excessive, to me. But I wasn't there. In this case, it seems the "kill the police" garbage is a little inappropriate, even with the current out of control police nationwide. This individual ended up laying in a bed HE made. Hope he RIP.

Another one came in the door on the opposite side of the building.

He was likely behind them, considering how that show usually films. The suspect was in the middle of he restaurant, between the 4 of them.

It was probably the officer coming through opposite door that shot the sound guy. That means he could have just as easily shot his colleagues.

If one of those officers got killed would you still be making excuses for poor gun safety?

Even if an officer had been killed, they take an oath that sometimes puts them in harm's way. I don't find fault in them RETURNING fire when a young mom (before police came in she wondered IF she would ever see her baby again were her words) was held at point black range.

Omaha has had a couple officers killed sitting in their cars before opening the door on routine traffic stops.

Sworn to protect and serve.

I have said that several times in several posts about this. He CHOOSE to go into an armed robbery for the story. Look at the placement of the bullet holes in the glass. See how high up they are. Chest high. When bullets started flying, he didn't hit the ground either. It went in through his arm pit.

It probably will become COPS highest rated single show.

It cherry picks. Never shows police being assholes. With the internet, we know that is more common than COPS lets on.

I would be surprised if it gets aired.

Dogs are just expendable animals, after all. Not like humans, who live Forever after the first shot to the leg... and the second or fifth or sixth...to the brain.

I don't respect the police. I don't care how you spin them.

They are becoming obsolete.

“There was a bunch of yelling. I heard the bang. (Washington) was about a foot away from me when it started,” Galloway, 21, said. “It was really loud. It sounded like a real gun. I couldn’t even tell the difference between officers’ guns and his gun.

“It was pretty much a hostage situation. The gun was pointed at me.”

Several people shooting to kill the other, no cover, not knowing if one will live another second. To be at that state of awareness.
