Walker gets support of Milwaukee police and firefighter unions
Source: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Madison -- Two unions that were largely spared from Gov. Scott Walker's curbs on collective bargaining endorsed him Monday.
Walker is facing a recall this summer because of his successful plan to all but eliminate collective bargaining for most public workers. Walker's plan mostly left alone police officers and firefighters, and the unions representing Milwaukee cops and Milwaukee firefighters renewed their support for him Monday. The two were some of the only unions to endorse Walker when he initially ran in November 2010.
Governor Walker has a strong record of supporting public safety with an unwavering commitment to first responders, said a statement from Michael Crivello, president of the Milwaukee Police Association. Today, we are proud to announce our support for Governor Walkers reelection.
The Walker campaign released a similar statement from Dave Seager, president of the Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Association.

Weren't both the Firefighters and police officers marching with the teachers a year ago against Walker's attack on collective bargaining rights?
The endorsement of Walker by these 2 unions is another reason why unions are on the decline. The Rethugs know how to divide and conquer.

(2,198 posts)Walker knew from the beginning that by exempting these two unions he would probably be able to withstand a recall. I only hope it was the union leadership putting this trash out and that the membership will vote to oust him. Walker will turn on them if he can retain his job and power. No where else to take from and Wisc. still has a bad budget problem

(45,274 posts)The Madison cops & firefighters, and many from elsewhere in the state, supported the protests.
For some reason, I thought back about 40 years, to when the Madison firemen supported the antiwar movement. The cops, of course, were out there beating on our heads.

(12,287 posts)is behind this. At least the ones I know personally...they are scared Walker will add them to the law to make it constitutional since the court just found that part of the law unconstitutional.

(36,063 posts)It's been an ongoing battle. Walker said he'd work to get rid of it, hence the support by these unions.

(53,661 posts)This was after years of union gains, but then Carter came along and implemented consent decrees for companies who had discriminated in employment for years to level the playing field. The EEOC and OSHA and all labor conditions took a drastic move downward and enforcement of the laws protecting workers were made almost impossible and the level of disrespect for the same workers was intense.
They never seemed to grasp the psychological trick, instead, they identified with the bosses and denigrated minorities even more. It was the end of the movements from the fifties and later to make this country live up to its ideals. And a number of postal service employers fit the same demographic described at the link. Those some of my friends were married to, hated Democrats, and voted for Bush in 2000.
This is a fine example of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. The face was all the people coming into the labor force that didn't meet their approval, and the fear of sharing power with them. It had been more or less their private good old boys' club in these situations, and they counted on that nasty socialism from military service and government work to take them into a good retirement. They didn't give a damn about generations to come, they'd got theirs. They had various reasons to justify themselves being 'entitled' while others were left out of the American dream.
In the case of these police unions coming out for a man who is against rights for other state employees no matter what carrot was thrown to them, it's just sad. There are groups of people who truly do not believe in equality or fair treatment. I can't for the life of me guess how this is going to end up. I'd read somewhere that this year was going to be the year when people made a decision that will determine the next hundred years or more on this planet. Be for the rich and yourself only, hate the poor and the dispossessed, or unite as a whole.

(113,015 posts)GOP pulls this shit ALL the time - they confuse people with the different groups or a lone branch of a group. This is a lone branch of a group, so they'll explode it into a much bigger story. GOPs know that mainstream media will give THEIR endorsement way more coverage than it will give to any Dem endorsee.

....if the police and firemen have enough resources to support walker, I would figure they have too many of my tax dollars....
