BAGHDAD (AP) Militants from the Islamic State group on Sunday publicly killed six Iraqi soldiers captured in an embattled western province where the extremists continue to advance despite an expanding U.S.-led campaign of airstrikes, residents said.
The killings took place in the town of Hit, about 140 kilometers (85 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, which the Islamic State fighters overran on Thursday night.
The Iraqi soldiers one in uniform and five in civilian clothes were lined up against a wall in Hit and shot in the head, the residents said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they feared for their own safety. The militants also bombed a police station in Hit, they said.
The fall of Hit was the latest victory by the Islamic State group as it battles the Iraqi military in western Anbar province.

(11,014 posts)then how come thousands of these terrorists people believe that it is?
Who taught them this? Was there anything in the religious texts that allowed them to justify this kind of behavior?
If their teachers are in fact indoctrinating mullahs, then how can this not be rooted in the religion in some fashion?
Inquiring minds want to know ....
Saying these people are not muslims and this is not true Islam is not enough. Competing views need to prevail and drown out these people's views.

(46,416 posts)Iraqi military bases? I assume they are getting help from local Sunnis. Iraq needs to pull back its forces and concentrate on what it can actually defend--hopefully Baghdad, the dams, whatever other strategic sites are deemed vital--and leave ISIS to the Sunni areas until the Sunnis decide they are tired of their bullshit. In the meantime, start cutting everything off to these areas--no supplies, no fuel, empty stores, no electricity--it will hurt civilians, but there's no other way.

(889 posts)Iraq is unfortunately a textbook example of what happens when an arrogant ill-informed executive (Bush) appoints an arrogant ill-informed administrator (Bremer).
So many people had to die just because of their stupidity. Tragic.

The ISIS guys are taking the defense posts slowly one after another. It doesn't look good.

(53,661 posts)Echoing the White Houses stated position, Dempsey said the US needed a coalition in the region that takes on the task of defeating Isis over time, something the administration this week has put effort into broadening and strengthening.
But the groups ultimate defeat, the general said, would only come when it is rejected by the over 20 million disenfranchised Sunnis that happen to reside between Damascus and Baghdad.

While no doubt not all of the 20 million displaced people support ISIS, that is a significant number of refugees. And that is why this isn't going away any time soon.
JMHO.
