Otter seeks stay on gay marriage mandate; Ada County prepared to issue licenses today

Source: Idaho Statesman

BOISE — Minutes before county clerks throughout Idaho were prepared to being issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples this morning, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy blocked an appeals court ruling that declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada.

The order came minutes after Idaho on Wednesday filed an emergency request for an immediate stay. The state's request said that without a stay, state and county officials would have been required to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples at 10 a.m. EDT.

Rich said he spoke to a representative from Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden's office at 9 p.m. Tuesday and was told to have his staff issue licenses to couples seeking them. Rich said he would continue issuing the licenses "until he hears otherwise."

Earlier this morning, Idaho Gov. Butch Otter filed a motion with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals seeking a stay pending appeal of the court's ruling Tuesday that Idaho's law banning gay marriage is unconstitutional be stayed pending an appeal.

OMG Gay people are getting married in Idaho right now.

Once again republicans are on the wrong side of history and are costing the people money
that they don't need to spend.

no way are interested in them do so because they have a latent need for punishment.

So many are told they are sinners from birth and they believe the crap ... that I think some are looking for punishment from political authority figures.

And combined with this is the strong need in them to make sure everyone else is punished and miserable too. It is Puritanism to the hilt and it runs rampant in this country, a country full of control freaks and authoritarians. And religious crackpots!

And many politicians make full use of this, and those voting for them are way too DUH to get what's going on.

I doubt there is a more conservative state the Union. Add to that the fact that the majority of citizens are either Mormon or a member of some other even more extreme Christian cult and Otter's requested stay can be seen in context. But the times they are a changin' - even in the most undereducated state in the union. Otter and his cronies can't stop histories march to freedom and equality.

Now, if you have any spare cash laying around, please support his challenger AJ Balukoff. Thanks to some horrific educational laws - actually repealed by the citizens we have, for the first time in decades, a chance to turn the Governor's office blue.
