(45,274 posts)I did not expect this at all, and am astonished.
I thought the next step would be the WI SC, where the Walkerite WMC majority would uphold the implementation of the law.

(4,219 posts)"On Thursday night the U.S. Supreme Court did so, issuing a one-page order that vacated the appeals court ruling pending further proceedings. Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented, saying the application should have been denied because there was no indication that the 7th Circuit had demonstrably erred."
Clarence Thomas, he could not have turned out worse, from day 1 till now. Idiot, never ask a question, ALWAYS on the wrong side, ALWAYS...

Obviously Scalia can't reach the part that makes the mouth move, but he sure can make the Thomas doll look like it's asleep pretty good.

(38,414 posts)Kennedy and the Chief Justice.....Who would have thought??
He, the Chief Justice, also voted an favor of the legality of the Affordable Care Act. (a shock to many media watchers, and to me.)
So, there is some sanity left...and North Carolina's crap will go down too..
Every once in a while, there is a positive surprise..This is that... "every once in a while..."

(17,469 posts)why the allowed the law to go forward in NC, but blocked it in WI?
dragonlady
(3,577 posts)In Wisconsin, we had it for a spring primary election that most people skip, and then it was blocked for over two years before the 7th Circuit sprang their decision on us with only a few weeks to go, without the elaborate publicity campaign that was planned to get people ready. It looks like both cases follow the principle of a Supreme Court case of several years ago: don't mess with the procedures too close to an election.

(10,301 posts)The Supremes overruled the Appeals Court on this. The appeals court said that the 2016 ID requirement needs to be looked at later on.
That's my understanding of it anyways.

(144,939 posts)A strict voter id law will go into effect in North Carolina in 2016 but during the 2014 election, workers are allowed to ask if the voter has ID but voters can vote without the required ids. Between now and 2016, this law will be litigated but right now the courts did not rule on this law because it was not really in effect yet

(17,469 posts)Why ask for it, if it isn't required unless the purpose of the question is to scare/discourage voters?
Gothmog
(144,939 posts)The theory is that this allows people to get use to the law. I am also betting that people will be turned away due to this law

(31,941 posts)They stopped them in WI but allowed them to go forward in both OH and NC. The rulings are completely consistent. In all three cases the court put the brakes on lower-court rulings that would have prompted late changes in election procedures in the run-up to Election Day.

(4,940 posts)I hope Alaska is next - we'll have one hell of a battle, given the takeover of the state by fundies during the pipeline buildup. But we'll win, and my niece Heather and her wife Darcy will get to come home in peace.

(3,544 posts)This guys has been nothing but a trouble maker since he took office. He was never "for the people", which has been the theme of typical republicants. When will people learn that republicants are for themselves, and not for the for the good of their state, or the country. There was no reason to institute this law to begin with, other than to punish the less fortunate, and make it difficult for people to vote. When we vote to put people in office, we expect that they will work for the majority of people, not the few. And denying people the right to vote is one of the lowest things a representative can do. All that time and money wasted. I'm guessing he had nothing better to do.
I hope this is the last straw for this weasel and he's voted out, once and for all. The state of Wisconsin deserves better.

The blocking of the ID requirement will make it possible for thousands to vote who couldn't have...if they get to the polls.
