Kanawha family judge performs first same-sex marriage

Kanawha County Family Court Judge Mike Kelly officiated his first same-sex wedding early Friday morning, the first full day after West Virginia officials began giving marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The marriage was one of the first, maybe the first, performed in Kanawha County. St. Albans couple Connie Schoolcraft and Robin Mattox were married in Kelly’s courtroom around 10 a.m. Friday, the judge said. He said the couple had also been wed years before in Vermont.

Kelly said the ceremony was nearly identical to the many others he has performed, with some adjustments: instead of using the phrases “this man” and “this woman,” he called both parties by their first names.
