Palestinian State Recognition: British Parliament To Vote On Recognizing Palestine As A State

Source: International Business Times

Just days after Sweden became the first major European nation to officially recognize the state of Palestine, the British parliament is set to vote on motion asking the UK government to do the same, according to media reports.

The non-binding motion, which reportedly has the backing of opposition Labour party MPs, will be presented before the House of Commons on Monday. The motion is largely symbolic and is not expected to change the government’s policies on Palestine even if it is passed, according to media reports.

“For too long the international community has cruelly refused the Palestinian people this right and by doing so has hindered the realization of peace and security in the region,” Labour MP Grahame Morris, who will present the motion on Monday, said, according to The Guardian. “Not only is statehood the undeniable right of the Palestinian people, but only an independent and sovereign Palestinian state can save any hope of a two-state solution.”

As of now, the UK does not recognize Palestine as a state. In 2012, it had also abstained from a United Nations General Assembly vote to upgrade Palestine’s status to a “non-member observer state.” However, Britain’s current stand on the issue is that it “reserves the right to recognize a Palestinian state bilaterally at the moment of our choosing and when it can best help bring about peace, “ the BBC reported, quoting former Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Heck. In a few decades ISIS can get a state too, in Syria or Iraq.

have expelled the Jews that have lived in Palestine for hundreds and thousands of years to create a state for people that belong to the special religion, just like ISIS is doing - no wait.

Colonialism was essentially the THEFT of land. When Britain and France carved up the Middle East, and Britain wound up with a "Mandate of Palestine," THAT was terrorism and unjust violence. When that land was given to (self described) Zionists it was obviously going to lead to generations of bloody conflict. But we (the UK and USA) didn't care, presumably because we figured we would always be on the winning side of the bloodshed. Boy, aren't we clever?

The idea that Palestinians wanting their own land back justifies Israel flattening densely populated areas every few years is fucking ridiculous. If the Jewish people have an unending ancestral right to that land, then by our own rational everyone of European or African descent must vacate the American continents. The Palestinians owned Jerusalem for hundreds of years, and it was stolen from them in the relatively recent past. And you blame them for being so enraged they may resort to violence?

Why were we justified in using violence to conquer Palestine, but they are never justified to use it in order to reclaim it?

The Israelis, Americans and Brits ought to apologize for making this terrible mess, and beg the world to peacefully accept the unjust creation of the nation of Israel, since now it cannot be undone. Giving the Palestinians their own nation is the least we can do.

Equating the Palestinians to ISIS is ridiculous. If anyone there is guilty of sweeping though an area and committing merciless genocide, it is the Israelis and their allies. If the people of Britain are finally waking up to this reality, then good!

Once Hamas does it, let them have a state of their own.

80 percent of the Palestinians were expelled out of 78 percent of Palestine in 1948. The Palestinians gave no one the right to take over their land.

The UN has no legal or moral authority to give control of land lived in by one people to another people.

Truman pushed hard to get the resolution to pass for reelection politics. The Palestinians were not obligated to surrender their homeland to help Truman's chances for reelection.

Thus, we now have the state of Israel and lots of Palestinians wishing they had a state, too.

As bad as the deal might have been for them back in 1947, had they taken it they might have been in a better position now then they are now in having rejected the deal.

That's how Israel ended up with 78 percent of Palestine. They really intended to take it all, and more, but the neighboring Arab nations blocked the total takeover.

The Palestinians were no more obligated to accept an "offer" of 45 percent of Palestine than the English would be to accept an offer of 45 percent of England. The rules for brown people are the same.

How fucking complicated is that? Would you ever ask:

Why do we view runaway slaves as sympathetic characters in history? Weren't they the ones breaking the law, not the owners who chased them down and lynched them?

Ya, genius, the law was made by powerful to screw over weaker people. That like almost never happens though, right?

As long as Israel had ta UN Resolution to justify its use of overwhelming force, then clearly the Palestinians deserve nothing!

Oh wait, no, this is DU, not FR, and a few decades later we can all see that the creation of Israel was a terrible mistake that unfortunately cannot be undone.

If a lot of other countries do this, maybe eventually the tide will turn and Israel will finally be forced to stop the aggression. Certainly the United States will not take this step, but other countries must recognize how hobbled we are on this issue, and that they need to step up and be world leaders.
