Michigan debate: Gov. Rick Snyder, Mark Schauer spar over tax policy and education funding

Source: MLIVE

DETROIT, MI — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer sparred over tax policy, education funding numbers and the general direction of the state on Sunday evening during their only planned debate of the election cycle.

The hour-long town hall was held on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit. Nolan Finley of The Detroit News and Stephen Henderson of the Detroit Free Press posed questions, along with some of the 150 or so undecided voters selected to attend.

Snyder defended the major tax code rewrite he approved in 2011, casting it as a matter of fairness and highlighting his push to eliminate the Michigan Business Tax, which many believed was overly complicated and burdensome.

“What we made was a fair system to encourage job creation,” Snyder said. “The Congressman voted for the Michigan Business Tax. It was something we had to get rid of to be successful in this state.”

We're just lucky that Terri Lynn Land is so obnoxious that the attack ads against Peters are backfiring & driving up Land's negatives, LOL. I fear we will be stuck with Rick The Dictator for another 4 years, sigh.

"Schauer dismissed Snyder’s suggestion that the tax code change was in any way related to a projected budget deficit that he inherited when taking office, saying Snyder “dug the hole $1.8 billion deeper” than it had to be.

“Our accountant governor is missing some columns on his spreadsheet,” Schauer said during an exchange on the so-called pension tax, which he vowed to repeal. “It’s called people.”

He never mentions that his Dem predecessor inherited a $4 billion deficit (from a Republican) and turned it into a $1.5 billion deficit.

A few thoughts, if anybody's interested.

1. I REALLY wish Schauer would have bashed Snyder on that continuous 'lost decade' horse shit. Let me try for a second: "Lost Decade?? You mean when Governor Granholm had to deal with the deficit John Engler and the Republicans left her? If we're going back in time, let's go back a little farther! Anybody here old enough to remember Democratic Governor Jim Blanchard? Remember the EMERGENCY FUND he left us? BILLIONS of dollars? And Republican Governor John Engler SQUANDERED it giving tax breaks to the wealthy? Anybody remember that?"

Or something like that, probably much more polished. I'm no politician, but I would have dearly loved to have heard some kind of answer. It seems like they want to bash Dems with Granholm and the Dems, if they're smart, should pound them for that. That's a horse shit talking point and it shouldn't go unchallenged.

2. I wouldn't buy a used car from Snyder. No. Fucking. Way.

3. Schauer pounded him nicely on the Equality issue. Good job there.

I don't know how much this debate will move the needle. I will be voting, as always.

But man I can not stand listening to that guy talk! It seems he was trying to fit 10 cliches into every sentence during that debate.
