Committee votes to subpoena Gov. Heineman on miscalculated inmate release dates

LINCOLN — In what’s believed to be an unprecedented move, a legislative committee voted Thursday to issue a subpoena for Gov. Dave Heineman to testify later this month.

The committee is probing the miscalculated release dates for hundreds of state prison inmates and other prison-related problems. The governor will be among those subpoenaed to testify Oct. 29.

Heineman, in a news release later Thursday morning, said he “welcomed” the opportunity to testify before the committee “and clear up any miscommunications.”

“The Department of Correctional Services, specifically former legal counsel George Green, made a series of significant mistakes and created a huge mess,” the governor said.
